The new four-part series titled “Miss Austen” promises to breathe life into the intriguing enigma of the burning of Jane Austen‘s letters, while offering an unusual perspective on the author through an adaptation, revealing aspects of her personality less frequently glimpsed.
Acting as Jane’s sibling Cassandra, Keeley Hawes steps into the limelight. She confides that the show seems like a fresh tale written personally by its author.
Describing her initial attraction to the series, Hawes shared with the BBC in a Miss Austen press pack: “Upon receiving the first episode of Miss Austen without any prior knowledge about its narrative, I was immediately captivated and enchanted by it.
It’s likely that many will find it delightful, as it seems akin to discovering an unwritten Jane Austen novel. What a charming and unexpected treat!
Reading that script or book left me just as tearful; it’s incredibly moving and remarkably close to home.
The narrative revolves around bonds between individuals, their families, and the significance of such connections in our lives. It explores feelings like love, sorrow, and the passage of time.
Furthermore, Cassy (played by Synnøve Karlsen) also discussed her perspective on what might attract viewers to the character of Miss Austen, as she stars in the series portraying a younger version of this character.
She suggested that many of Jane’s tales might be drawn from real-life experiences or interactions she had, and perhaps some were also shaped by their shared childhood with Cassandra as young women.
What’s likely to attract viewers is revealing the hidden factors that influenced Jane’s novels, and I believe the portrayal of their lives will carry the same impact as her own works.
It’s fascinating to catch a peek at the real Jane, especially her life as an author, and understand her true nature.
In the story, Patsy Ferran portrays Jane, who frequently appears during Cassy’s early adult life. Together, they journey through various stages of adulthood, experiencing both the ups and downs that life often presents.
When asked for her thoughts on what viewers might find captivating in Miss Austen’s story, the actress shared: “What really draws me to Miss Austen is its portrayal of a unique sisterly love story. The show does an exceptional job at depicting the intricacies and depth of sibling relationships.
Beyond being sisters, Cassandra and Jane share an extraordinary bond; they’re not only best friends but also soulmates and the most cherished individuals in each other’s lives.
Ferran went on to say: “They have romantic feelings towards others, yet it’s ultimately each other whom they cherish and lean upon.
There are two women who, by their personal decision, choose to remain unmarried. One striking quote from Gill’s book expresses this as, ‘the gift of spinsterhood lies in the freedom that one’s walls become one’s own.’ In essence, they have crafted a realm of self-reliance and independence.
In my experience, it seems that they’re primarily dependent on the financial support of the males in their surroundings. This situation often extends into a lifelong service towards their siblings and parents. However, they carve out a small realm within this larger reality where they can exert some control over their own lives.
This observation delicately captures the tender aspects of their daily interactions, yet there’s a remarkable, almost magical quality hidden within what appears to be an ordinary relationship.
