Get Ready for Reunion: A Groundbreaking Deaf-Led Thriller Premiering Soon!

On Monday, 7th April, the anticipated new thriller series “Reunion” is set to premiere on BBC One at 9:00 PM. Simultaneously, all four episodes of the series can be streamed as a box set on BBC iPlayer from the same date.

As a passionate viewer, I’m utterly captivated by this series that’s masterfully orchestrated by Matthew Gurney. Joining him are the exceptional talents of Rose Ayling-Ellis, former EastEnders star and 2021 Strictly Come Dancing winner, as well as Anne-Marie Duff, known for her remarkable performance in Bad Sisters. This gripping tale is marketed as an intense emotional journey of vengeance and reconciliation, promising a rollercoaster ride of drama and emotion.

One standout feature of this series is its unique dual language production – it’s presented both in British Sign Language (BSL) and spoken English. This creative work was penned by William Mager, a gifted author who hails from Sheffield and is himself deaf.

The story chronicles the path taken by Daniel Brennan (Gurney), a resolute deaf individual, as he seeks to correct past mistakes and unearth the facts surrounding the incidents that landed him in prison.

As the story goes on, it portrays Brennan as a character who finds himself stuck in the middle, not fully fitting in with the hearing society nor accepted by his closest friends and the larger deaf community due to a terrible act he committed.

In the midst of his solitude, Brennan primarily cherishes his significant bond with his daughter Carly (Lara Peake). Unfortunately, they’ve been out of touch since Brennan was arrested more than ten years prior.

Initially, snapshots from the upcoming series were disclosed a month ago, and during that period Gurney remarked, “In contrast to typical representations of deaf lives, my character Brennan embarks on an extraordinary journey. However, this depiction presents a man who is despised within the deaf community.

In his statement, he emphasized that the series accurately portrays the reactions and actions of deaf characters on-screen in an honest and genuine manner. He highlighted that as deaf actors, they are more visual storytellers, focusing less on sound and more on using one’s eyes to decipher the narrative. The series, initially announced in February 2024 by writer Mager, aims to educate viewers about the deaf experience without resorting to common tropes like elaborate sign language or portraying a silent world.
