System Shock 2’s 25th anniversary remaster by Nightdive Studios has been officially confirmed. This much-anticipated version will be available on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 this coming summer, specifically on June 26, 2025. Unlike the first game which underwent a full remake, this release is a high-definition upgrade, capable of running at up to 120 frames per second.

For six years, Nightdive Studios’ team has been diligently working on this project, but releasing the remaster has taken time due to their lack of access to the full source code. To overcome this challenge, they engaged in “thorough reverse engineering” and relied heavily on debugging techniques and breakpoints to comprehend the old coding structure. The original engine was primarily intended for PC use, which made it more difficult to adapt it for consoles.
In simpler terms, Larry Kuperman, our Vice President of Business Development, stated that although the game continues to be a timeless favorite, its code and visuals required significant updates. The Dark Engine, created by Looking Glass Studios for System Shock 2 and Thief games, was one reason these titles remain classics because it offered features beyond its era, but it also made the game tricky to modify due to its advanced capabilities.

Upon its release for both PS5 and PS4, the remaster will boast controller compatibility, enhanced character designs, weapon models, and movements, as well as a host of quality-of-life updates. Notable upgrades are made to inventory item usage, and there are 50 Trophies to be earned.
