The film “Stargate,” directed by Roland Emmerich, who also helmed “Independence Day,” is slated to join a streaming service starting from early June.
Starting June 1st, subscribers of Prime Video will have the opportunity to watch Stargate. Originally a 1994 science fiction action film, it gained fame as a television series. The film features Colonel Jack O’Neil, portrayed by Kurt Russell, who leads a team through a mysterious ring-shaped device known as the Stargate. This device establishes a wormhole to another Stargate somewhere in the universe. They land on Abydos, where they encounter an ancient Egyptian-speaking civilization dominated by an alien masquerading as the ancient Egyptian sun god Ra. The cast includes James Spader, Jaye Davidson, Alexis Cruz, Mili Avital, and Viveca Lindfors, along with Kurt Russell.
Originally, Stargate was planned as the initial installment in a trilogy, designed to delve deeper into the mysterious artifact and enrich the saga’s lore. Regrettably, despite earning nearly $200 million at the box office on a budget of only $55 million, MGM opted not to produce a follow-up film. Instead, Stargate led to other projects, with Roland Emmerich and franchise co-creator Dean Devlin stepping aside, while Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner took charge of the TV series adaptation and its subsequent spinoffs.
What Would the Stargate Sequels Have Been About?
2023 saw Devlin disclose some intriguing details about his work, explaining that the second edition would have delved into the question of why there were pyramids in Mayan culture, providing an answer before the third installment wrapped up the entire mythology. “The Yeti and Loch Ness Monster were part of our plans,” Devlin revealed. “We aimed to explain how these mysterious creatures are interconnected within our narrative.
Although there are currently no plans for the film trilogy of Stargate to be completed, directors Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin made an attempt to restart the series for the big screen in the 2010s. The reboot was initially announced by MGM and Warner Bros. in 2014, with Emmerich as the director and Devlin as the producer. This film aimed to kick off a new Stargate trilogy. However, following several years without updates, Devlin admitted in 2016 that the reboot trilogy plans had been put on hold and were no longer being actively developed. Eight years later, in August 2024, Emmerich clarified his position, stating that he simply didn’t wish to continue the project, so he chose not to proceed with it.
In April 2023, MGM revealed that Stargate was among the Intellectual Properties (IPs) they intended to revive after being bought by Amazon. It’s uncertain at this stage whether a new movie or TV show is in development for the franchise. However, given the enduring appeal and lengthy run of Stargate on television, it seems logical to either reboot or expand upon the series’ mythology and universe. The latest addition to the franchise was the 2018 web series Stargate Origins, which centered around a young Catherine Langford, a character featured in both the 1994 film and SG-1.
Stargate arrives on Prime Video on June 1.
