What you need to know
- Microsoft’s end-of-year Xbox celebrations have begun.
- Like previous years, Microsoft has collected data on your gaming and is showcasing it on a nice website.
- I played far too much Elden Ring, although STALKER 2 is rapidly climbing up the ranks.
As a researcher who has spent countless hours immersed in the digital world of gaming, I must say that Microsoft’s Xbox Year In Review is a fascinating glimpse into our collective gaming habits. It’s always intriguing to see how my own statistics compare to others, and this year’s data was particularly enlightening.
As the year comes to an end, large corporations have the opportunity to exhibit the extensive data they’ve gathered about your routines.
At the end of the year, various platforms are jumping on board with the trend to present statistics about your behaviors and activities within their systems. This isn’t new to Microsoft, especially when it comes to Xbox. The vast amounts of data collected by gaming companies for improving game development can also be beneficial in creating features like these, as Microsoft demonstrated recently.

As an analyst, I can confidently say that Elden Ring has been my go-to game this year, and it’s all thanks to Shadow of the Erdtree. This massive expansion has consumed countless hours of my gaming time as I hunted down every boss and mini-boss in my pursuit of vanquishing Miquella. From Microsoft’s data, it appears that only 13.9% of Xbox players managed to earn the achievement to become Elden Lord. That means that a significant majority of you reading this have a statistically low chance of having maidens.
It’s worth noting that Microsoft provided a breakdown of gameplay time by mobile, PC, and cloud for the first time this year. My console gameplay clocked in at nearly 500 hours, while I spent about 100 hours on PC, mobile, and cloud gaming combined. Fortunately, they don’t have any data yet on my Battle.net account, which would reveal that I racked up more than 1000 hours in World of Warcraft this year – just want to avoid any potential judgment!
Microsoft categorized my preferred game genres as follows: Action & Adventure (47%), Role-playing (26%), Shooter (22%), Strategy (3%), and Other (2%.). It turns out that I am among the top 10% of Xbox players in terms of playtime, and I’m even in the top 3% for achievements earned and gamerscore. This comes as a bit of a shock to me. Perhaps there are many new accounts on the platform who have just started playing Call of Duty Black Ops 6 through Xbox Game Pass.
What did your Xbox year look like?
2021 was an unusual year for Microsoft as speculations arose around their potential move to release their games on PlayStations. This prompted doubts about Microsoft’s future dedication to Xbox console development. However, with Steam planning to develop and launch its own console-like hardware, similar to SteamOS, while maintaining both Xbox and PlayStation exclusives, the concept of “console exclusivity” might appear quite peculiar in the coming years.
2024’s Xbox Showcase was nothing short of impressive, instilling confidence that Microsoft may have finally resolved its first-party challenges as we approach 2025. Titles like Fable, South of Midnight, and Avowed all appear robust. Additionally, Microsoft seems to have addressed its past issues with third-party developers, as Final Fantasy games from Square Enix and Capcom’s classic fighting games are now available on Xbox. Furthermore, well-known PlayStation exclusives such as Death Stranding and Genshin Impact have made their way to Xbox. To round off the year, heavy hitters like STALKER 2, Call of Duty Black Ops 6, and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle are ensuring a strong finish for Microsoft.
Regarding the Xbox platform, though there are concerns about its direction and goals, it has confirmed that it is developing new console hardware and potentially even a handheld device for future use. However, predicting how the Xbox scene will unfold over the next 5-10 years can be challenging due to factors such as studio closures, changing user preferences, financial constraints, and instability in the market – all of which have impacted what was once perceived as a thriving and robust sector.
