The story of Major Kusanagi has grown into one of the most significant in anime lore, with the initial “Ghost in the Shell” movie often regarded as the pinnacle within this genre. Next year, the studio behind “Dandadan” and “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World” is set to release their interpretation of the legendary anime, and it seems quite distinct from previous versions. A new sneak peek at the upcoming anime adaptation suggests that the production company is following the original manga closely, offering viewers a refreshing perspective on the cyberpunk universe.
The recently unveiled teaser image presents a Major character that seems to most closely resemble the original design from the source material compared to any other we’ve seen yet. Accompanying this sneak peek, it has been confirmed that the 2026 adaptation of “Ghost in the Shell” will be directed by Mokochan, written by EnJoe Toh, and designed by Shuhei Handa. Although a specific launch date remains undisclosed, this fresh take on the advanced anime universe is anticipated to be one of the most highly-anticipated premieres next year.

Ghost In The Shell’s Creator Speaks
To provide insight on the upcoming release of this latest take on “Ghost in the Shell,” its creator Shirow Masamune has shared his thoughts. He noted that this new version will be the fourth adaptation of the series, following those directed by Oshii, Kamiyama, and Kise. If we break down the different versions of “Ghost in the Shell” and categorize them separately, this would mark the tenth overall adaptation. This includes splitting the S.A.C. series into Seasons 1, 2, and Solid State Society, classifying ARISE as a standalone series, The New Movie, and SAC_2045 into Seasons 1 and 2.
Given the change in the production team, it might be seen as the beginning of a new era or second version. Since the original manga is quite vintage, please bear with me on that note (apologies!). However, I truly look forward to providing another engaging visual journey once more.
More Major On The Way?
This year, the creator who kick-started the phenomenon that is Ghost In The Shell, Mamoru Oshii, shared his ambition to further explore and develop the universe. To put it in my own words, he’s been busy working on the third installment of the movie series. He mentioned, “I’ve begun work on a third film. There’s just one loose end I need to tie up first. If I can manage that, I want to see it through. But if I say too much, it might lose its essence.” As of now, there’s no set release date for the upcoming film, but the future certainly looks promising for this timeless anime franchise.
