At CES 2025, Sony didn’t talk about video games, but they made significant announcements for their PlayStation franchises that left a mark. Among these announcements was an anime titled “Ghost of Tsushima: Legends,” based on Sucker Punch’s “Ghost of Tsushima.” This anime is scheduled to premiere on Crunchyroll in 2027, and it promises to bring the traditional samurai lifestyle to life through captivating storytelling and visually stunning imagery.
In the “Star Wars: Visions” anime titled “The Duel,” Takanobu Mizuno will be at the helm for direction, with Gen Urobuchi taking responsibility for scriptwriting. This project is a joint effort between PlayStation Productions, Aniplex, Crunchyroll, and Sony Music, who serves as the music and soundtrack partner.
In a press statement, Rahul Purini, Crunchyroll’s president, expressed that this project showcases the innovative collaboration within Sony, blending the skills of PlayStation Studios and PlayStation Productions with Sucker Punch Productions and Aniplex, alongside Sony Music’s renowned global artist roster. Additionally, it leverages Crunchyroll’s marketing and distribution network that caters to fans first. The upcoming anime adaptation of ‘Ghost of Tsushima’ will provide fans a thrilling opportunity to engage with the game in an anime format that promises to be both daring and pioneering.
Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions, expressed his enthusiasm by saying, “We’ve already demonstrated the exceptional quality and adaptability of our gaming content in numerous successful film and television ventures. We’re thrilled to announce our very first anime adaptation! The captivating setting and folklore-inspired Legends mode of Ghost of Tsushima make it an ideal choice for this project, and Aniplex is the ideal collaborator to transform Sucker Punch Productions’ popular video game into a breathtaking new anime series.
It’s unclear if the upcoming anime will follow Jin Sakai in the main story, reinterpret the multiplayer narrative from Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, or introduce a brand new tale. However, it serves as another step in expanding the franchise, joining the upcoming live-action Ghost of Tsushima film helmed by Chad Stahelski, the director known for John Wick.
Absolutely, there’s the upcoming title named “Ghost of Yōtei” as well, slated for release on PS5 and set approximately 300 years after its initial installment. This game introduces a fresh protagonist named Atsu, so follow this link for further information.
