Ghost of Yōtei Co-Creative Director Says the Katana is Still “The Most Valuable Weapon”

In the land now called Hokkaido, once known as Ezo in Japan, Atsu, the main character of “Ghost of Yōtei,” embarks on a challenging quest to avenge her family’s deaths. Armed with tools such as a grappling hook and katana, Atsu will have access to additional weapons, as hinted by the recent trailer for the open-world sequel to “Ghost of Tsushima.

Among the weapons available, there’s the kusarigama, which we didn’t get to witness its chain in motion, and the yari, or long-range stabbing spear. These are joined by the pair of swords, the odachi, and firearms. However, despite the inclusion of gunpowder in combat, co-creative director Nate Fox emphasizes that the katana remains central to the gameplay experience.

In a recent interview with Variety, he expressed that although the Katana remains the prized weapon, an extra chance to cause explosions in a game is always a welcome bonus.

Jason Connell, who shares creative leadership, noted, “We’ve hinted at the kusarigama, and it’s clear she wields two swords, offering an exciting dual-wielding aspect. Towards the end of this trailer, you can glimpse a spear, known as a yari. The novelty of handling such diverse weapons in the game is refreshing. Each weapon boasts unique advantages.

Absolutely, these elements serve a purpose beyond simple gameplay diversity. Fox highlighted that mastery of a weapon mirrors the essence of samurai films – it’s a crucial aspect of their appeal. However, we aimed to create an even stronger bond between players, the weapons, and the environment by offering more profound connections.

Within the region known as Ezo, you’ll encounter instructors who teach you to wield that weapon in a way reminiscent of martial artists depicted in films. This allows you to grow and develop your skills much like Atsu does. Interestingly, when asked about influences on the title, Fox referenced Akira Kurosawa’s film “Yojimbo”.

The film ‘Yojimbo’ by Akira Kurosawa holds immense significance in our minds as the starting point for its unique portrayal of a roaming mercenary, which characterizes Atsu.

Beginning on October 2nd, you can grab the game “Ghost of Yōtei” for your PS5, priced at $69.99. To delve deeper into the intriguing world design, described by Sucker Punch as their “most open” yet, just click here to find out more!
