Ghost of Yōtei Developer Striving for Authentic Depiction of Hokkaido, Vegetable Foraging Confirmed

In the coming month, we’ll delve deeper into the spirit of Yōtei from Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Tsushima. However, before that, the developers are keeping us engaged by sharing snapshots and insights from their recent research trip to Hokkaido, Japan. The latest blog post on PlayStation features co-creative director Nate Fox talking about how they aim to portray Ainu culture in a sensitive and considerate manner during the project’s development.

In preparation for this, they consulted with an Ainu cultural consultant and their family, and later embarked on a mountain journey to gather vegetables. This encounter was quite favorable, and gamers may soon witness similar activities within the game. Notably, these experiences could contribute to the feature that allows camping anywhere in the open world.

We all from Sucker Punch decided to set aside our cameras and immerse ourselves in the task at hand. We took a closer look at the plants surrounding us, marking the beginning of our educational journey into Ainu culture. That evening, we agreed to incorporate foraging into our upcoming game, aiming to recreate the enriching experience we’ve had for players.

Among the other significant places the team explored are the Oshima Peninsula, the Nikko Toshogu Shrine, and the Nibutani Ainu Museum. These real-life locations provided us with insights into the types of artifacts we might encounter in the game and their usage. Although Ghost of Yōtei‘s Hokkaido is a work of fiction, our aim to create an authentic atmosphere is grounded in these genuine experiences as shared by Fox.

The “Spirit of Yōtei” is scheduled to release on October 2nd for PS5. This new adventure takes place over 300 years after the events of “Ghost of Tsushima,” following Atsu as she seeks vengeance. Her journey leads her to confront the Yōtei Six, who are responsible for the destruction of her family. The story is further fleshed out through playable flashbacks that offer additional context. Keep an eye out for more information and gameplay previews during our upcoming in-depth look next month.
