Ghost of Yōtei is “The Most Open World We’ve Ever Made,” Says Sucker Punch

Surprisingly, Sucker Punch Productions unveiled a new trailer for the game titled “Ghost of Yōtei” and set a release date. In this game, players assume the role of Atsu, seeking vengeance against the Yōtei Six who murdered her family and left her for dead, embarking on a bloody path of retribution.

Instead of being similar to its previous installment, Ghost of Tsushima, Atsu will find himself investigating leads in the new land of Ezo. He’ll decide which enemy to take down first, with the region offering a variety of intricate landscapes. In an interview with Variety, creative directors Jason Connell and Nate Fox explained how the Edo period shaped the game’s world design.

Fox remarked, “This game we’ve crafted is the most open one yet.” He continued, “The purest pleasure lies in getting lost within its expanse. Your sense of wonder serves as your compass, leading you through the breathtaking landscape. To us, these moments of exploration feel sacred, and we strive to immerse players so deeply that they feel fully engaged with the world of Hokkaido or Ezo, as it was once known in our game’s timeline. Ezo is a character in its own right, brimming with concealed mysteries and a collection of tales.

Connell remarked, “The setting is just so untamed and teeming with nature. We have a chance to craft a more rugged, rural narrative compared to an urban one. With numerous ecosystems at our disposal and countless breathtaking landscapes to draw inspiration from, we’re lucky to choose the most stunning locations and make them vibrant for our players.

In this game, you’ll notice that the “wild” theme carries over into the gameplay, as players appear to be accompanied by a wolf ally in battle. However, even though there are many mysteries left to solve, Atsu can also relax with some activities similar to those found in Tsushima that don’t involve combat.

The specter of Yōtei is set to debut on October 2nd, exclusively on PS5. Notably, it will be compatible with the PS5 Pro from its first day. If you’re eager to pre-order, mark your calendars for May 2nd. For more information about the Digital Deluxe Edition, click here.
