After leaving Sony (PlayStation), Shuhei Yoshida, the former executive, has shared insights about the company’s operations during several interviews. In a recent conversation with PlayStation Inside, he disclosed that he had already tried out early versions of “Ghost of Yōtei”, expressing his confidence that it will surpass its precursor, “Ghost of Tsushima“.
Regarding the hurdles encountered by foreign studios creating games set in Japan, Yoshida pointed out that historically, the Japanese market has been tough for western developers to penetrate. Yet, he emphasized that these markets often welcome games which accurately depict and respect the country. Furthermore, Yoshida highlighted the extensive research on Japanese history conducted during the development of Ghost of Tsushima, a factor contributing to its positive reception in Japan.
Yoshida stated that the Japanese market can be challenging for Western video games. He’s unsure if there’s a specific formula, but he emphasizes the importance of grasping Japan’s culture when creating games like Ghost of Tsushima or Assassin’s Creed Shadows, which are based in Japan and delve into its history.
For the creation of “Ghost of Tsushima”, Sucker Punch collaborated closely with a Japanese producer at Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE), along with members from Japan Studio. This collaboration was advantageous for the studio as it allowed them to present their concepts to these individuals, who would then evaluate whether they accurately depicted Japan and were respectful. Additionally, the teams traveled to Tsushima Island and made a concerted effort to learn about its history and traditions. They successfully conveyed the island’s distinctive ambiance in the game, as seen in elements like the wind system, which may be one reason for its success. Interestingly, the game has also stimulated tourism on Tsushima Island, underscoring its authenticity.
In addition, Yoshida highlighted that Japan’s market often favors games based on its culture. Therefore, for better sales in Japan, particularly when creating a game set in Japan, it’s crucial to ensure your development process is geared towards gaining a comprehensive understanding of the country.
Regarding the Ghost of Yōtei, Yoshida expressed that he had the opportunity to try out several early versions of the game while it was in progress through various stages. He commends Sucker Punch on their upcoming sequel, expressing his excitement by saying that they’ve “pulled off another success.
Speaking about it, “Playing Ghost of Tsushima was simply amazing, and having had a chance to test out Ghost of Yōtei throughout its various development phases, I can confidently say that the game will be even more impressive. The team at Sucker Punch has truly outdone themselves again.
First unveiled in September 2024, the highly anticipated title “Ghost of Yōtei” finally got a trailer in April, confirming its release on PS5 on October 2nd. The sneak peek also shed light on the backstory of protagonist Atsu and her pursuit of the Yōtei Six. Over time, more details about the game have been disclosed, such as Sucker Punch’s claim that their open world is the most expansive one the studio has ever created.
While I’m immersed in this gaming world, I can’t help but get excited about the fact that pre-orders for the upcoming game, Ghost of Yōtei, are now live! If you’re as pumped as I am, be sure to check out some of the fresh weapon types they’ve got lined up for us. Can’t wait to get my hands on them!
