Ghost of Yōtei Will Give Players Greater Control Over the Story

As a seasoned gamer with over three decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that the announcement of “Ghost of Yōtei” has me thoroughly intrigued. Being a die-hard fan of the original “Ghost of Tsushima,” the prospect of exploring a new narrative set 300 years later with a fresh protagonist is exhilarating.

During the latest State of Play presentation, Sony and Sucker Punch unveiled the upcoming sequel to the 2020 open-world samurai hit, Ghost of Tsushima, titled Ghost of Yōtei. Unlike its predecessor, this sequel is set 300 years later, introducing players to an entirely new protagonist. It’s clear that it’s taking a unique direction in several aspects. Notably, the storytelling aspect will offer players experiences not found in the original game.

In conversation with The New York Times, the creators of “Ghost of Yōtei” disclosed that the game will offer players a more extensive ability to shape protagonist Atsu’s story compared to what “Ghost of Tsushima” fans are accustomed to. While “Tsushima” did incorporate some choice-and-consequence mechanics, it appears that Sucker Punch aims to significantly enhance these elements in the upcoming game.

Moreover, Jason Connell, our creative director, mentioned that our studio aims to steer clear of producing monotonous content in an open-world environment, a criticism frequently leveled at games like Ghost of Tsushima, due to their recurring elements such as golden birds, foxes, and similar features.

Creating an open-world game presents a difficulty: the monotony of repeating similar tasks,” he pointed out. “Our goal was to create distinct, varied experiences to counteract this repetition.

Ghost of Yōtei is due out sometime in 2025 for PS5.
