As a lifelong Ghostbusters fan who’s witnessed the ectoplasmic evolution of this iconic franchise, I have to say that while I was thrilled to see Annie Potts back in action as Janine Melnitz, the absence of Sigourney Weaver’s Dana Barrett left a proton pack-sized hole in my heart. It’s a bummer that she seems unsure about returning for a potential sequel, but hey, who knows? Maybe they’ll find some way to bring her back from the quantum realm (or whatever dimension ghosts come from)!
One standout feature of the latest ‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire‘ movie was watching Annie Potts as Janine Melnitz don the classic jumpsuit worn by her comrades in past installments. On the downside, this new sequel lacked Sigourney Weaver’s character, Dana Barrett. To make things even more frustrating, Weaver herself is unsure if she’ll return for a future film, but since no ‘Frozen Empire’ sequel has been confirmed yet, there’s still a chance we might see her again. Currently, ‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’ is available on DVD and streaming on Netflix.
Deadline asked if there might be another installment in the franchise, to which Weaver responded, “As far as I know, not at this time.”
Fans were understandably disheartened by the absence of Weaver in the recent Ghostbusters adventure. However, they had anticipated this, as Weaver herself had revealed last year to Collider that she wouldn’t be part of the movie, explaining, “No, I didn’t receive an invitation for this Ghostbusters sequel… I think a touch of us can stretch quite far.”
Besides starring in the initial “Ghostbusters” and “Ghostbusters II”, Weaver also made brief appearances in the 2016 “Ghostbusters” remake and the latest film, “Ghostbusters: Afterlife”. Notably, Weaver isn’t the only one who didn’t appear in “Afterlife”; popular actor Rick Moranis has yet to rejoin the franchise since “Ghostbusters II”, although he has largely stepped away from the entertainment industry.
It’s intriguing that Weaver’s comment about “a small amount having a large impact” seems to foreshadow the response to Frozen Empire. Many viewers and critics shared a sentiment: despite their enjoyment of all the characters, the movie felt cluttered due to the inclusion of major roles for characters from Afterlife, as well as significant screen time for characters from the initial films. This led to an overall experience that was somewhat overwhelming.
Although the future of the live-action franchise remains uncertain, Netflix is actively working on an animated Ghostbusters series. As the animated series The Real Ghostbusters kept the franchise going in the ’80s following the two live-action movies, there’s a strong chance that this new Netflix show could maintain the legacy of these heroes for years to come.
Stay tuned for updates on the future of the Ghostbusters franchise.
