As a devoted fan of British humor and a connoisseur of the supernatural, I find myself captivated by the intriguing tidbit about the scrapped character from Ghosts. Mathew Baynton’s vision of a lonely ghost in an empty field, played by none other than the enigmatic Reece Shearsmith, is a tantalizing prospect that leaves me yearning for what could have been.
Matthew Baynton, creator of Ghosts, shared details about a character that didn’t make it onto the show and the Inside No. 9 actor he envisioned for this role.
At the unveiling of the book offering an insider’s look into the making of the sitcom, titled “Ghosts: Brought to Life,” the actor who portrayed Thomas Thorne took a moment to ponder on his journey during the show’s production.
As a dedicated film enthusiast, I’ve had the pleasure of witnessing an array of big-name celebrities grace the screen throughout this series’ impressive run. Among them were comedy legend Jennifer Saunders and pop sensation Kylie Minogue, who couldn’t resist the allure of the show. Furthermore, it was a delight to see familiar faces from the cast and crew’s past projects make an appearance too, enriching the overall viewing experience.
He started talking, “We discarded a character initially. The original concept involved a man who would linger in a vacant plot, as it once housed a dwelling next to it and was haunted.
In the initial season, it became a recurring joke to occasionally switch to a distant shot of a solitary spirit standing amidst vast expanses. This forlorn figure, who seemed to be calling out to someone in the house, was attempting to initiate a dialogue.
Baynton explained, “Initially, I imagined Reece Shearsmith for the role, but unfortunately, there was no part written for him.
In the recent collaboration between the actor and Simon Farnaby on Wonka, the actor shared that his character played a palpable, albeit non-crucial, role in shaping the narrative of the initial script drafts.
When Mike and Alison arrive, everyone seems to dislike them and wants them to leave,” he clarified.
Alison could potentially show where the ghost lived next door and remark, ‘Unless we manage to save this house, it’s destined for demolition, leaving you as Pete is now.’ This served as a vivid warning of a dire future that maintained their uneasy peace with her.
Baynton stated: “However, we ended up modifying the scripts, which made it simple for the production team to remove that scene. Consequently, there’s no need for us to hire an actor, take them to a field, and shoot the footage.
Of course, there’s no guarantee that Shearsmith would have agreed or been available to take the role, but it’s an interesting insight into what this never-before-seen character might have looked like.
