Ghosts co-creators reveal what happens after the final episode

As a devoted fan who’s spent countless hours laughing, crying, and even screaming at the antics of the Ghosts gang, I must say that this insight into the future of Button House has left me both intrigued and slightly heartbroken.

Mathew Baynton and Jim Howick, creators of Ghosts, have shared insights about the happenings at Button House following the conclusion of the final episode from last year’s season.

At the heartfelt conclusion, newly-minted parents Alison (played by Charlotte Ritchie) and Mike (Kiell Smith-Bynoe) bid farewell to their spooky abode and its spectral residents.

Instead of living in Button House, they chose a traditional family dwelling to bring up their child, Mia, transferring the ownership of Button House to a real estate developer who went on to transform it into a golf and spa complex.

Baynton disclosed that, as a matter of course, the six creators have exchanged ideas among themselves on how their characters might behave following the conclusion of the series.

“We figure Julian would be enjoying roaming around people’s honeymoon suites,” he began.

As a passionate cinephile, I found myself utterly smitten by the character of Thomas Thorne, the romantic poet, during Alison’s stay at Button House. Yet, there’s a lingering suspicion in my heart that my affection might stray towards other characters in the storyline.

Thomas often believes he’s exclusively devoted to one woman, yet it’s evident he isn’t, as his feelings seem to change. He elaborated on this point.

It’s likely that he has moved on to focus on someone else, and when Alison returns annually, he feigns indifference as if there’s no one else in the picture.

In simpler terms, Howick clarified that the last episode shows an older Alison and Mike making a holiday visit to the peculiar spirits, but this doesn’t mean their encounters with these ghosts are limited only to this occasion.

He mentioned that the concept behind the last episode was supposed to convey that Alison and Mike drop by more frequently than just at Christmas, but it seems we might not have made that point crystal clear.

It’s important to note that after the hotel begins operation, the ghosts seem to be thriving quite enjoyably. They appear to be adapting splendidly to their new existence, as hinted by the playful depiction of them using the sauna and steam room in our scenes.

Howick noted: “One of the appealing aspects of [the ending] is that you’re familiar with the characters to such an extent that it feels plausible to picture each one of them appreciating distinct parts of the hotel.

1) “It’s likely that Pat is catching some sports action outdoors or engaging in another activity. Meanwhile, a hotel offers more than what Alison provided.

“Alison gave them a glimpse of modern life, and I think the hotel would give them a buffet of fun.”
