As a longtime fan of Ghosts, I can certainly relate to Mathew Baynton’s sentiments about wanting to improve certain aspects of the show, even if it’s just one joke here and there. Having followed his career since The IT Crowd days, I’ve come to appreciate his dedication to quality and attention to detail.
Matthew Baynton, a co-creator of “Ghosts”, has shared that there’s one joke from the popular show he wishes could have been more cleverly crafted.
In collaboration with his fellow cast members Simon Farnaby, Martha Howe-Douglas, Jim Howick, Laurence Rickard, and Ben Willbond, the actor portraying failed poet Thomas Thorne has co-written a book titled “Ghosts: Brought to Life.
The book gives fans a glimpse behind the scenes of each episode, with the entry for season 5 episode 3 – Pineapple Day – seeing Baynton confess that he wasn’t entirely sold on Thomas’s sudden affinity with gangsta rap.
In the book “Brought to Life,” he admits, “Among all the episodes we’ve created, that was one instance where I would gladly confess that I wished I could have thought of a more ingenious idea.
Frequently, stories may feature groups of three to four spirits working together on a common objective. To add depth, it’s essential to ensure each spirit has its own unique journey or narrative from point A to B within this shared mission.
Baynton explained, “Initially, Thomas kept repeating the term ‘b***h,’ but it was merely a temporary filler for me. I thought, ‘We’ll think of something more suitable later,’ and surprisingly, we never got around to it [laughs].
The actor shared that his remarks in the book were a result of the joke’s somewhat disappointing setup, yet he also acknowledged that it had a certain amusing quality to it.
In another part of our conversation, Baynton disclosed the Inside No. 9 actor he envisioned for a role in Ghosts, as the cast also discussed potential outcomes beyond the final episode and updates about upcoming projects together.
