Ghosts creators reflect on emotional challenge of ending show at Christmas

As a devoted fan of Ghosts, I can’t help but feel a sense of deep admiration and gratitude towards Mathew Baynton and Martha Howe-Douglas, the genius minds behind this extraordinary series. Having witnessed their labor of love unfold over the years, it was both poignant and bittersweet to see them bid farewell to Button House and its paranormal inhabitants on that fateful Christmas Day in 2023.

Reflecting back, creators Matthew Baynton and Martha Howe-Douglas of the popular BBC sitcom Ghosts looked back on their decision to conclude the show exactly a year ago, on Christmas Day in 2023.

In the last installment of the show, Alison (played by Charlotte Ritchie) and Mike (Kiell Smith-Bynoe) found themselves considering another move away from Button House and their ghostly friends, this time to build a fresh start with their newborn daughter, Mia.

Audience members shed tears as Alison bid farewell to the spirits who felt like cherished kin; Baynton and Howe-Douglas were among those moved to tears during the final episode’s airing.

Baynton, who portrays Thomas Thorne in the show, mentioned that we, as well as himself, were still trying to understand and accept it to some degree, in an unusual manner.

“So when the episode aired, there was a moment of finality about it.”

I found myself overcome with emotion as I celebrated Christmas with my family this year. The experience felt almost surreal, and I found myself longing for a quiet moment to shed some tears.

Through WhatsApp, fortunately, I found myself needing to be with my friends physically. Essentially, that moment felt like the last piece of a puzzle falling into place, symbolizing our success. It was as if I had exclaimed, “Wow, this is it! This is definitely it – we achieved our goal.

Baynton expressed: “We poured as much love and attention as possible into it, and it’s heartening to see that people appreciated it.

In a heartfelt confession, Howe-Douglas, known for her role as the anxious Lady Button in the sitcom, openly shared that she experienced strong emotions while watching the series finale, courageously opting to “watch it alongside the nation” at 7:45pm on Christmas Day.

She explained: “I’d obviously seen it, but I hadn’t seen it with all of its bells and whistles – and I wanted to watch it live with everyone. Well, I cried. I did. I cried, I’ll admit.

I wept, for it seemed like that was truly the final moment. After everyone else had witnessed it, it was over. It was incredibly moving, I believe.

Howe-Douglas further shared: “We felt incredibly fortunate for what we managed to accomplish, as well as the affection bestowed upon our show. I am deeply grateful to have been a part of it, contributing to something that touched people’s hearts so profoundly.

Since the conclusion of Ghosts, the imaginative minds responsible for it have published two books: The Button House Archives, an in-story collection, and Brought to Life, a behind-the-scenes guide. They are planning to collaborate on new projects together.

However, precisely what their next collaboration will look like remains a mystery for now.
