Lena Dunham is open to rebooting Girls—once enough time has passed.
The 38-year-old creator, who penned, directed, and produced the HBO series, has shared her preference for returning to the Emmy-winning show if it depicted the characters Hannah (Lena), Marnie (Allison Williams), Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet), and Jessa (Jemima Kirke) at an advanced age.
In a recent chat on The Rushfield Lunch, I mentioned that our group hasn’t discussed a reunion yet. The reason being, we had agreed way back when the series ended that if we were ever to reunite, it would be during a significantly different phase in their lives – perhaps when they turn 60. So, let’s keep that conversation for then.
She stated, “Let’s catch up with them when they’re past the ‘Sex and the City’ era, they’ve progressed even further. The aim of the series has always been to embrace the unanticipated, so we intend to be surprising if we reunite.
Lena, who appeared alongside Adam Driver, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Andrew Rannells in the series, shared her reasoning for waiting to release it. She believes that the naivete of the four young women living it up in New York City, a portrayal which seemed fitting for their privileged lives back then, might not resonate as authentically in today’s context.
She went on to say, “In today’s world, following the Me Too movement, the summer uprisings of 2020, and the nationwide dialogue about race, and more recently, conversations about gender, it would be hard for individuals living in Brooklyn and being part of the global community to display the confusion and ignorance that the characters portrayed, which was integral to their story.
As a lifestyle enthusiast, I’m always keeping an eye out for the latest trends and pop culture references, and while it appears that another season of “Girls” isn’t in the works at this moment, I can certainly appreciate the renewed interest in the show, particularly among Gen Z. I’ve always been grateful for the impact that “Girls” has had on television and the conversations it sparked about modern womanhood.
In an interview with TopMob News in June, Lena expressed her heartfelt gratitude and admiration for today’s youth who appreciate the show. She never anticipated that her creation would be viewed at all, let alone after a decade. She’s simply overjoyed that it continues to connect with people.
She stated, “I am utterly impressed by Generation Z. They are more stylish, they are wiser, they are more forward-thinking. It seems that in all the ways older folks once scoffed at millennials, my perspective is completely reversed.
Despite a Girls reunion not appearing on our screens just yet, here’s a look at other TV shows that are premiering or making a comeback soon instead.
