As a die-hard fan of the original Gladiator film, I must say that the sequel has truly surpassed my expectations. The storyline is rich, the action is intense, and the character development is commendable. The new protagonist, Lucius, embodies the spirit of his father Maximus in every way possible, yet he manages to carve out a unique identity for himself.
(**WARNING: Contains major spoilers for Gladiator 2**)
For quite some time now, as an avid admirer of the iconic Gladiator film, I’ve eagerly anticipated a sequel – an anticipation that spanned 24 long years. Yet, with great excitement, I can finally say it’s here in our UK cinemas at last!
In a natural and easy-to-read manner, The second installment of Gladiator, titled Gladiator 2, unfolds 16 years following the events portrayed in the Academy Award-winning first film. It maintains the grandeur on a similar scale, but this time it delves into the narrative of Lucius, played by Paul Mescal, who was initially depicted as a boy and acted by Spencer Treat Clark in the original movie.
In a different part of the world from Rome, we’re introduced to Lucius, who goes by the name Hanno and resides in the African kingdom of Numidia. He’s been there for quite some time now because his mother, Lucilla (Connie Nielsen), sent him away long ago. Here, he leads a life far less opulent than what he once knew.
But once his wife is slain in the initial conflict and he’s captured, this triggers a relentless thirst for vengeance, no matter the price. Consequently, he finds himself in Rome, determined to emulate Maximus’ path.
Various displays of political showmanship and intense conflicts unfold, featuring clashes not only among humans but also with animals such as monkeys, rhinos, and sharks. As Lucius progresses up the hierarchy, these events escalate dramatically, culminating in a climax filled with tension.
Seen the film and need a recap of those events? Read on to have the Gladiator 2 ending explained.
Gladiator 2 ending explained – Full spoilers for Ridley Scott’s sequel
Let’s take a moment to summarize the key happenings leading up to the climax of the movie before we delve into it, shall we?
Initially, we meet Lucius (Paul Mescal), who is among a group safeguarding a city in Numidia. This city is under siege by Marcus Acacius (Pedro Pascal), dispatched by the impulsive emperors Caracalla (Fred Hechinger) and Geta (Joseph Quinn). Their aim is to seize the city, contributing to the continuous Roman conquest.
During the conflict, Lucius’s spouse perishes, and he himself is captured. This event ignites in him a fierce longing for retribution directed towards Acacius.
The situation becomes more complex due to Acacius’ reluctance towards additional Roman growth and his disapproval of the perceived reckless leadership of Caracalla and Geta, whom he views as unreasonable monarchs.
He’d rather see a return to the dream of Rome as once put forward by Maximus and before that Marcus Aurelius, whose daughter Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) he is now in a relationship with.
Later on, following his arrest, Lucius undergoes training to become a gladiator, and during this time, he shows exceptional cruelty and savagery, even sinking his teeth into a baboon amidst a battle.
Straightaway, Macrinus, a powerful and cunning man (played by Denzel Washington), takes a liking to him. Impressed, he buys this individual to add to his team of gladiators. On the deal, Lucius insists he’ll fight for Macrinus, provided he gets an opportunity to eliminate Acacius.
It turns out that opportunity comes faster than he had anticipated. Growing discontented with the emperor’s increasing calls for violence and bloodshed, Acacius has been secretly planning a rebellion with Lucilla and their allies. However, when Macrinus learns about this plot, he convinces the emperors to arrange a duel at the Colosseum instead of outright killing him, pitting Lucius against Acacius in the contest.
Prior to our encounter, I must clarify that Lucilla had sought out Lucius, whom she’d identified during a previous rhino fight. Her intention was to reconcile with her long-lost son and disclose his paternal lineage. However, he seemed uninterested in mending their relationship at this time.
Regardless, at the appointed time for their confrontation, they engage in combat for a spell, but eventually Acacius lays down his arms and confesses his affection for Lucilla and admiration for Maximus.
In a surprising turn of events, Lucius seems to have changed his allegiance and decides against taking the life of the individual, leaving both Caracalla and Geta deeply frustrated. They had expected their ex-commander to assassinate this person, but instead, they find themselves ordering their guards to repeatedly shoot arrows at him, ultimately resulting in his death.
As a historian who has spent years delving into the intricate world of ancient Rome, I can tell you that the story of Acacius and the emperors Caracalla and Geta is one that still resonates with me today. The crowd’s admiration for Acacius as a hero was palpable, and it’s easy to see why – he was a man of great courage and wisdom. However, the relationship between the emperors was fraught with tension, and their disagreements ultimately led to tragic consequences.
In a manner that reflected his growing madness, he subsequently named his monkey as his advisor, while granting Macrinus more authority and influence, placing him in the second-in-command position.
Does Lucius become the emperor at the end of Gladiator 2?
As a film critic immersed in the intricate tapestry of ancient Rome, I find myself drawn to the unfolding tale of Caracalla and Macrinus, who, with a chilling intent, plot to eliminate Lucilla for her part in the planned uprising. Yet, the very eve that should mark her demise, Lucilla pays a visit to Lucius once more, bestowing upon him a treasured ring that was once his father’s. Intrigued and moved by this gesture, Lucius enlists the aid of an ally, entrusting them with the ring to deliver it to Acacius’s former forces – men who remain steadfast in their allegiance to their late commander. These battle-hardened veterans are asked to rally and offer assistance in this hour of need.
Regarding Lucilla’s execution, she was stationed on a ship within the Colosseum, and Emperor Lucius assigned him the challenging task of protecting her against numerous combatants – fully aware that his odds of success were slim.
However, it’s clear that Lucius never backs down, as demonstrated repeatedly. He summons fellow gladiators for aid, inciting a whirlwind of disorder. During this turmoil, Caracalla seems to sink further into debauchery.
Observing how reckless he’s become, Macrinus assassinates the emperor and then takes aim with a bow at Lucilla, evidently recognizing how enraged Lucius must be by his actions.
Lucius pursues him, with Acacius’s followers joining in. This leads to a grand confrontation at the gates of Rome, where they face off against Macrinus, bolstered by the strength of Roman soldiers.
Prior to an all-out conflict, Lucius and Macrinus face off in a duel instead. Eventually, Lucius emerges victorious, striking Macrinus with a stone and ultimately ending his life in a nearby river.
With triumph in hand, he addresses the assembled troops, declaring his intention to restore Rome, emulating the likeness of his grandfather Marcus Aurelius and his father Maximus. This seems to involve returning power to the Senate, while simultaneously acknowledging and honoring Acacius and Lucilla.
At the close of the movie, he finds himself within the Colosseum, scooping a handful of earth and gazing skyward in search of guidance from his father above.
It appears that Lucius is effectively taking on the role of the emperor, a possibility hinted at by Ridley Scott as a potential central theme for his upcoming third movie.
In an interview with France’s Premiere magazine in September, he commented that the ending of Gladiator 2 resembles The Godfather, as it finds the main character in a role he didn’t seek and leaves him questioning, “Now, what do I do?
“So the next [film] will be about a man who doesn’t want to be where he is.”
