Gladiator 2 Finally Heads to Streaming (Here’s Where to Watch)

Following its successful run at cinemas during Thanksgiving, Ridley Scott’s long-anticipated “Gladiator” sequel has now arrived on streaming platforms. Until now, you could buy or rent “Gladiator II,” but starting from Tuesday, it will be accessible through a subscription streaming service. This means that the only expense for viewing is your usual monthly subscription cost.

It’s no surprise that the premier destination for streaming “Gladiator II” is Paramount+. This platform is the first to offer exclusive streaming rights for all Paramount’s theater releases, including “Gladiator II”. The film was added to the Paramount+ streaming library on Tuesday morning, sharing space with the Academy Award-winning original “Gladiator”, also available on the same service.

In a week before Thanksgiving, Gladiator II made its debut in cinemas, premiering alongside the hugely popular musical Wicked. Both movies enjoyed significant commercial success, serving as alternative viewing options for audiences, much like Barbie and Oppenheimer did last summer.

Despite Wicked dominating as the top earner between the two films, the sequel of Gladiator performed exceptionally well for a rated-R swords and sandals epic. The movie has raked in over $458 million globally, barely falling short of the original Gladiator’s earnings ($465 million). This achievement is noteworthy given that the response to Gladiator II paled in comparison to its predecessor. It’s worth mentioning that Gladiator II didn’t receive the same level of critical acclaim as the original, which won five Oscars back in 2001.

In the sequel titled “Gladiator II“, the narrative unfolds approximately two decades after the events of the initial film. The central character is Lucius, who was merely a child during the first movie and is now portrayed by Paul Mescal. This new storyline mirrors the path taken by Maximus, played by Russell Crowe in the original. After being apprehended by the Roman army, Lucius is compelled to engage in combat as a gladiator within the Colosseum.

In “Gladiator II,” Mescal shares the screen with a stellar ensemble, led by Denzel Washington as the menacing and powerful Macrinus. Washington’s remarkable portrayal of Macrinus has garnered the most acclaim for the movie. Alongside him are Pedro Pascal, Connie Nielsen (who reprises her role from the original Gladiator), Joseph Quinn, and Fred Hechinger.

20 years following his nomination for Best Director with the original, Ridley Scott took up the director’s chair again for “Gladiator II.” The script for this follow-up was penned by David Scarpa.
