Who is composing the score for Gladiator 2?
As a die-hard movie buff, I’ve got to mention that while the legendary music for the original Gladiator was crafted by the brilliant duo of Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard, they haven’t been back to create the soundtrack for Gladiator 2.
Instead, Harry Gregson-Williams will be responsible for creating the film’s score. He is known for composing music for movies like The Martian, The Last Duel, and Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget. He began his career as a protégé to Hans Zimmer.
In an interview with Curzon, Zimmer expressed his decision not to return simply like this: “I’ve explored that universe sufficiently and believe I did it justice. Continuing would only lead me to either replicate what I’ve done before, which I wish to avoid, or face criticism for supposedly falling short of the mark set in my initial work.
In Dune: Part Two, we have a gladiator fight, don’t we? There was certainly a gladiatorial combat in Gladiator, but they couldn’t be more dissimilar! I found it refreshing to depart from comparisons and move on, having grown tired of it after making three Batman films, four Pirates of the Caribbean films, or four Kung Fu Panda films.
Gladiator holds a unique spot in my affection. I find it incredibly untamed. No matter how exceptional the score might have been that I could’ve composed for it, the music from the initial film resonates deeply with audiences.
I had that experience performing live in The Lion King remake. I attempted to break free from my usual choice of words, but each time I did, it didn’t seem right. Therefore, I ended up repeating myself frequently. It is essential for you and the audience to strive for innovation.
I’d also like to mention Harry Gregson Williams, who initially worked under me, but later became close friends with both Tony and Ridley Scott. For me, he’s more than just an assistant; he’s family. His composing skills are simply outstanding.
The movie seems to be under capable management, as I’ve discussed it with Harry. He mentioned that he’s feeling some pressure from the original soundtrack, so he’s putting in extra effort to ensure it’s top-notch.
Which song features in the Gladiator 2 trailer?
On July 9th, the first teaser trailer for Gladiator 2 debuted, and it’s set to the tune of the 2012 track “No Church in the Wild” by Jay-Z and Kanye West, featuring Frank Ocean and The-Dream.
Previously, the same melody was notably featured in the movie trailer for “The Great Gatsby” (2013) and within one of its scenes as well.
Some people found it incongruous when the movie’s soundtrack included contemporary hip-hop songs instead of traditional tunes, as they believed this anachronism disrupted their immersion in the story set in ancient Rome.
Gladiator 2 will arrive in cinemas on 15th November.
