Ridley Scott’s blockbuster sequel swiftly climbs to impressive peaks, only a day following its premiere on a well-known streaming platform.
Through the sequel to the iconic “Gladiator,” which made its debut last November, 24 years since the Academy Award-winning original movie first hit the screens, soared to the number one spot on the Amazon Prime Video movie chart upon its April 23 release. The film’s strong performance on Prime Video is a continuation of its growing popularity on Paramount+ .
In the sequel to “Gladiator,” titled “Gladiator II, ” the storyline shifts focus from Maximus Decimus Meridius, the original film’s protagonist portrayed by Russell Crowe who won an Academy Award for Best Actor, as his character met a tragic end in the first movie. Instead, the lineage of Maximus is brought to the forefront with his son, Lucius Verus/Hanno (Paul Mescal), stepping into his father’s shoes and joining the gladiatorial arena under the guidance of General Marcus Acacius (Pedro Pascal) and the Roman Army. The sequel also introduces Oscar-winning actor Joaquin Phoenix as Macrinus, a character with questionable morals, and additional appearances by two original “Gladiator” stars, Connie Nielsen as Lucilla and Derek Jacobi as Senator Gracchus.
Given the lofty standards set by Gladiator, a multiple Oscar-winner and a seminal work in the sword-and-sandal genre, Gladiator II held its own under the weight of high anticipation. The movie garnered a 70% critical rating and an 82% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, not much lower than the first film’s scores (80% critical, 87% audience). Furthermore, Gladiator II came close to matching the original’s box-office success, pulling in $462.1 million globally. However, with its production budget reportedly swelling to a hefty $310 million, it fell slightly short of recouping its costs.
Opinions among some prominent figures in Hollywood were split regarding the reaction to ‘Gladiator II’. While one Oscar-winning director commended the film for Scott’s exceptional direction and storytelling, another Academy Award-winner criticized it, stating that it lacked emotional depth and seemed overly commercial compared to previous works.
