In July of the previous year, the realm of television bid farewell to an iconic figure from the 1990s, as John Anderson, the original referee of Gladiators, sadly passed away.
He additionally served as a trainer for athletes participating in the Commonwealth Games and the Olympics. The upcoming season of Gladiators, set to broadcast starting from the 18th of January on BBC One, marks the first time it will be aired posthumously, with him passing away at the age of 92.
Sabre, originally known as Sheli McCoy, remarked, “He was truly iconic.” Like Anderson, she hails from Scotland.
It’s a pity he couldn’t be involved in the renewed series in some way, yet I expect they’ll honor him in some manner.

After Anderson’s passing during the previous summer, Mark Clattenburg, who took over as referee on Gladiators, honored him by stating: “One of the most memorable figures in our industry and will forever be cherished.
Following him as a Gladiator in the latest series was no easy feat, but his unwavering commitment to upholding the rules left an indelible mark on me. Rest in peace, legend – your spirit lives on!
Previously known as Wolf from Gladiators, Michael Van Wijk recently expressed his condolences for John Anderson on Instagram. “I’ve just learned that my close friend John has sadly passed away,” he wrote. “Many believed that John was my rival on the show, but in reality, we were true friends.
My character’s success on the show wouldn’t have been possible without my collaborations with John. He was the heart and soul of the show, and his absence will be deeply felt. Farewell, John.
The upcoming season of Gladiators is anticipated to build upon the impressive viewership of its 2024 episodes, averaging approximately 6.02 million viewers each time.
Fans will be excited to witness not just one, but two upcoming events: Unleash and Atlaspheres, with Atlaspheres being a fresh take on an ’90s classic. Also, there will be some new Gladiators joining the existing group.
