Glen Powell Hilariously Shoots Down Rumors of Taking Over Tom Cruise Franchise

As a movie enthusiast who’s seen his fair share of action-packed films, I must admit that the idea of Glen Powell taking over the Mission: Impossible franchise from Tom Cruise is tantalizing. However, as someone who’s had a few close calls at the local amusement park’s roller coasters, I can understand why Powell might be hesitant about following in Cruise’s death-defying footsteps.

Glen Powell and Tom Cruise share many similarities, with Powell admiring Cruise as one of his major role models who has now become a close friend. Moreover, Powell expresses his desire to emulate Cruise’s career trajectory that he’s established over the years. However, Powell doesn’t aim to replicate Cruise’s path, particularly when it comes to heading the Mission: Impossible series.

This week, the preview for the eighth chapter of the series titled “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” was released, confirming that this would mark the end of Tom Cruise’s character Ethan Hunt’s storyline. There has been talk about Jeremy Renner’s character, William Brandt (Powell), possibly becoming the main character if the Mission: Impossible franchise were to continue beyond this installment. Regrettably for those who wished for that scenario, Powell has shown no inclination towards assuming the lead role.

During an interview with Pat McAfee for ESPN, Powell was inquired about the possibility of joining the Mission: Impossible series, following in Tom Cruise’s footsteps.

Powell stated that his mother wouldn’t approve of him taking on the role of leading ‘Mission: Impossible’. Everyone acknowledges it as the most dangerous job out there; it’s essentially a deadly trap.

Absolutely, Powell is pointing out the death-defying feats that Tom Cruise has showcased in the Mission: Impossible series throughout his career. Notably, he’s performed these stunts himself, and his collaboration with director Christopher McQuarrie has resulted in each of the more recent installments attempting increasingly daring and complex stunts. It’s safe to say that most actors wouldn’t relish the risk and dedication needed for such films as Cruise does.

Tom Powell isn’t set to join or take over from Tom Cruise in the Mission: Impossible series, but they are collaborating on launching another well-known movie franchise into the future. The highly successful Top Gun: Maverick was released a couple of years back and smashed North American box office records. It’s no surprise that a third Top Gun film is already under development.

In the much-anticipated sequel of Top Gun, Powell took on the role of a pilot named Hangman, who initially appeared to be a possible antagonist. However, he evolved into one of the film’s most beloved characters. It has been officially announced that Hangman will reappear in Top Gun 3, with Powell set to reprise his role alongside Cruise and fellow Top Gun alum Miles Teller.
