As a seasoned music enthusiast with an encyclopedic knowledge of tunes spanning decades, I must say BBC’s The Hit List is a delightful challenge that truly tests one’s musical mettle. Having stepped into the hallowed studio myself earlier this year, I can attest to the exhilarating atmosphere and nerve-wracking tension as contestants strive to outwit each other in a battle of wits and melodies.
As a lifelong music enthusiast and avid fan of trivia games, I can hardly contain my excitement for the return of BBC’s The Hit List this weekend! Having spent countless hours listening to various genres and decades of music, I feel confident that my knowledge will be put to the test in this engaging series. With Marvin and Rochelle Humes at the helm, I know I’ll be in for a fun-filled and intellectually stimulating experience as they challenge my brain with a variety of creative rounds. Can’t wait to see how well I do!
Once again, a prize of £10,000 awaits the victor, as three duos compete across various stages, trying to identify the artist and title of a song. The final duo will then face the challenging Final Chart Rundown trial.
Before the events on TV transpired, I chose to try out the game myself earlier this year, just to gauge its level of difficulty!
Stepping onto the splendidly illuminated stage, we commenced the “Written by the Stars” segment. In this round, the initial tune was chosen by any artist, and correctly identifying it would lead to the subsequent song being penned by the same artist.
For lovers of ’00s and 2010s tunes, you’ll surely appreciate our hard work, as it culminated in a significant achievement – becoming the first team to reach a total of 10 points!
Inside the studio, there was a thrilling, escalating energy as the scores climbed higher and higher. With what felt like an endless reservoir of musical trivia, I managed to advance to the Final Chart Countdown – however, signs of strain started to emerge.
In a high-stakes game worth approximately £10,000 (symbolically speaking), we were challenged to identify 10 songs and their respective artists accurately… but there was a twist. The money started decreasing as soon as five seconds of music started playing, creating an intense atmosphere of urgency.
While not playing for actual money, I cannot fathom how intense it must be as a real player!
If we were playing for a real prize, we would’ve taken home a whopping £3,667.
A pretty good effort… right?

With The Hit List going on for seven seasons, just how to Marvin and Rochelle do it?
Having years of experience under my belt, I’ve come to understand people’s tendencies quite well. I can predict what someone won’t want to do and what they will, as well as vice versa. It’s a skill that has been honed over time, and it serves me well in navigating social situations.
Discussing their reasons for revisiting The Hit List annually, the duo also offered insights into why viewers remain eager for more episodes of this popular show.
Marvin expressed similar thoughts and said, “Not many shows can captivate people across different generations, but I believe ours excel in this regard due to our selection of songs dating back to the ’70s, or even earlier. This makes it possible for your aunt or grandmother to watch along with everyone else!”
The Hit List returns to on BBC One and iPlayer on Saturday 17th August at 6:20pm.
