God of War Developer Confirmed to Be Creating New IP

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say I’m both intrigued and excited by the news that Santa Monica Studio is branching out and creating a new IP. After following their incredible work on the God of War series, it feels like stepping into uncharted territories – much like Kratos in the Nine Realms!

It appears that Santa Monica Studio, the team responsible for ‘God of War Ragnarok’ and the broader God of War franchise, is reportedly working on a new game. Prior to the release of ‘God of War Ragnarok’, previous director Cory Barlog hinted at a secret project he was involved with at Santa Monica Studio. Although PlayStation has not revealed details about Santa Monica Studio’s next project, it’s now confirmed that it will be something distinct from God of War.

Based on Glauco Longhi’s LinkedIn profile, it appears that Santa Monica Studio is currently working on a new project. In his professional summary, Longhi mentions that he was invited back to the company in 2024 after leaving in 2019. Now, he holds the role of “Character Supervisor” for an undisclosed project, but it has been suggested that this latest effort is connected to a completely new intellectual property (IP).

“Santa Monica Studios offered me a chance to return as the Character Supervisor, managing the entire character development process for their new project. Excited to rejoin the team, I am looking forward to collaborating with them once more on character design in video games,” he expressed about their upcoming endeavor.

Should Santa Monica Studio be working on a fresh, original game (IP), this move signifies a significant change for them. For over a decade, games associated with the God of War series have been their sole production following the launch of the first one in 2005. Although there were hints of a new project after ‘God of War: Ascension’, the studio later chose to continue with the franchise and released the rebooted ‘God of War’ in 2018 instead.

Previously, there were hints that the secretive project from Santa Monica Studio might be a science fiction game. However, just because they may be developing a sci-fi title doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll stop working on the God of War series. Although God of War Ragnarok concluded the Norse saga, the God of War franchise remains one of PlayStation’s key properties, so we can expect more games in this series to be produced, even if the studio is currently focusing on this unnamed intellectual property.
