As a dedicated God of War fan who’s been through countless battles and mythological realms since the days of ancient Greece, I find myself deeply engrossed in the current debate about where Kratos should venture next. Having witnessed the magnificent transformation of the series from the cradle of Western civilization to the frosty lands of Norse mythology, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia for the roots that first drew me into this epic saga.
When God of War was launched on PS4 in 2018, it revitalized the franchise by transitioning its backdrop from ancient Greece and Greek mythology to Norse mythology. The upcoming sequel, God of War: Ragnarok, follows suit with the Norse mythology setting. However, it seems that God of War has moved on from Norse mythology for now. This leads us to wonder about the possible setting for the next installment in the series. Will the franchise revisit Greek mythology or explore a new realm altogether?
It’s not yet officially confirmed, but with the exceptional critical and sales performance of the 2018 reboot and God of War: Ragnarok, it seems almost certain that another God of War game is underway. Given that it’s a key franchise for PlayStation, they’re likely using it across multiple platforms. A recent job posting from developer Santa Monica Studios suggests a next-gen God of War game for the PS6 might be in development.
As we eagerly await the upcoming God of War installment, fans are currently debating where the story should head next. After delving into Greek and Norse mythologies, some propose expanding the series to Egypt or India, allowing for an exploration of their rich mythological histories. Others have proposed ancient Japan as a potential setting. On the other hand, there are those who aren’t keen on Kratos hopping from one mythology to another and prefer a revisit to the original roots of the franchise, which is ancient Greece.
This idea of him traveling across realms might seem a bit outdated to me, and I’d rather God of War stayed away from feeling like Assassin’s Creed. If I were in charge, I’d create tension within either Greece or the nine realms so we can see Kratos defend his territories.
Beyond the previously mentioned top three scenarios, other ideas include Celtic, Mayan, or Roman mythologies that some suggest as possibilities.
As a die-hard fan, I’m speculating that if the upcoming God of War game is indeed for the PS6, it would be fascinating to delve into a fresh mythology. The similarities between potential options like Celtic or Roman could blur the lines with past titles. To me, Egypt appears to be the most probable choice, offering a unique twist from previous games’ settings like Japan, India, or China. However, I’m always open to hearing your thoughts! Where do you think God of War should journey next?
