It appears that, following the 2018 reboot’s success with Sony’s God of War franchise, the company could be exploring its earlier history for the next installment. According to Tom Henderson from Insider Gaming, it’s rumored that the upcoming game may transport us back in time, focusing on a much younger version of Kratos.
During the latest installment of the Insider Gaming Weekly podcast, Henderson hinted at the upcoming game’s return to ancient Greece. Although these facts are yet to be verified, Henderson additionally suggested that this new game could explore the bond between a youthful Kratos and his father as its primary focus.
Additionally, Henderson discussed the recent speculations from last week concerning the upcoming God of War game, which allegedly will be set in ancient Egypt and centered on the era’s pantheon of deities and additional mythical tales.
In the podcast, Henderson shared that the rumor about the new God of War game being set in Egypt which we discussed last week was not accurate. Just before the podcast went live, I received a message stating that instead, the game will be set in Greece. This version features a younger Kratos as the main character.
It seems the plot revolves around his relationship with his father, as well as related matters,” he added on.
Henderson additionally discussed the possibility of revamping the initial trilogy of the God of War games, which originally appeared on PS2 and PS3. He allegedly picked up on “whispers” about a remake, suggesting that the launch of this remake could coincide with plans to bring Kratos back to Greece.
It’s worth noting that during the podcast discussion, they mentioned a potential State of Play event by Sony happening next week. This segment focused on predicting possible games that could appear there, such as “Death Stranding 2: On the Beach”. However, the hosts, including Henderson, have a different perspective. They suggest that Sony might be planning something more substantial for this showcase.
Grant Taylor-Hill, the podcast host, mentioned that the State of Play will take place in the middle of the following week. He’s particularly thrilled about this event as he’ll be unveiling a new game from an upcoming studio. Interestingly, he hasn’t discussed it anywhere before, but we can expect its premiere during State of Play, which he’s eagerly anticipating.
Regrettably, more information regarding the studio and the enigmatic title remains undisclosed. However, Taylor-Hill has hinted that it’s a game which is entirely novel to us – one we’ve neither heard nor witnessed before.
Just over a week since the last round of speculation, there’s been another wave of rumors about the next main location for God of War possibly being Ancient Egypt. Previously, Cory Barlog hinted at the possibility of the series exploring Egypt, and it’s worth noting that the 2018 title’s development considered Ancient Egyptian settings as a potential game environment.
Currently, there’s talk that the TV series adaptation of God of War, which was initially developed, might be starting over completely based on reports from October 2024. This change comes after the departure of showrunner Rafe Judkins and executive producers Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, with a fresh creative vision now in store for the production.
