As a gamer, I’ve just learned some sad news. It seems that Counterplay Games, developers of the PS5 launch game Godfall, has shut down based on recent LinkedIn posts about layoffs and studio closures in the gaming industry. Reports also indicate that Toadman Interactive and Freejam have closed too. Toadman Interactive was famous for Immortal: Unchained, while Freejam is known for the free-to-play PC title Robocraft.
According to further research by PlayStation Lifestyle, the studio known as CPG was recently closed down last month following their collaboration with Jackalyptic Games on a particular project. Regrettably, it appears that this partnership did not carry over into the new year, leading to the termination of CPG.
Initially generating much buzz as the first game officially announced for the PS5 at The Game Awards in 2019, the final version of this title failed to meet the high expectations set by its initial announcement. While it received a Metacritic rating of 61, our review on Godfall for the PS5 was less favorable, earning a score of 5/10.
Our assessment is: “If the exceptional combat system in Godfall was representative of the entire game, we’d be talking about an outstanding PS5 launch title. Regrettably, it seems that’s the only impressive aspect. The loot system lacks significance, the environments feel repetitive, and the mission design can be frustrating, making it difficult to find pleasure in playing Godfall.
