Alexander Skarsgård recently clarified rumors about his character’s reduced role in the 2021 film “Godzilla vs. Kong“. In an interview with Empire magazine, he admitted that a substantial part of his performance was cut during editing due to the movie’s focus on epic monster battles over character development, which is common in such blockbuster films. This absence was also noticed in the sequel “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” released last year, indicating the franchise’s growing emphasis on monster spectacle at the expense of its human characters.
Alexander Skarsgård acknowledged that there were originally more character-focused scenes for his role that didn’t make it into the final cut of Godzilla vs Kong. However, he recognized that as one of only two main characters in the film, his screen time might be limited compared to the titular monsters. He humorously accepted this reality and appreciated the collaboration with director Adam Wingard, stating that while they could create intricate character development, ultimately, it was Godzilla or Kong who would take precedence over additional scenes featuring Skarsgård. He concluded by acknowledging that the movie functioned well as it was, and there was no need for more of him in the story.
Alexander Skarsgård shared his experience working on major studio films, stating that he’s formed great creative partnerships with directors who encourage a playful atmosphere on set. He added that while it’s never been a problem for him to feel creatively restricted or smothered, the high stakes involved mean that some of the more unusual character traits or subplots he comes up with might not make it into the final product due to the significant financial investment at risk.
In the initial movie version, the character of Dr. Nathan Lind was initially portrayed as a geologist whose reputation had been tarnished due to his unconventional ideas about the Hollow Earth. Throughout the story, he played a crucial role in linking various plotlines involving Monarch, Kong, and the journey into the Hollow Earth. Some aspects that could have added depth to his personal backstory, such as the circumstances surrounding his brother’s demise during an earlier expedition, were minimized in the final edit. However, despite these omissions, Dr. Lind continued to be a key figure in the plot, even performing a selfless act by reviving Kong in a crucial scene towards the end.
The Monsterverse Continues with Godzilla x Kong 3
The MonsterVerse series continues to thrive, with a third collaborative movie already in production. After the blockbuster hit “Godzilla vs Kong: The New Empire“, Legendary Entertainment has announced that the next installment, titled “Godzilla x Kong 3“, is set for release in 2027. This upcoming project signifies a shift in creative direction, as Grant Sputore steps up to direct, replacing Adam Wingard who previously helmed both team-up films but has moved on to direct “Onslaught” for A24. Notably, the forthcoming sequel is being penned by Dave Callaham, known for his writing contributions to movies like “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” and “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse“.
The upcoming chapter in the MonsterVerse is set to deepen the mythology even more, all while keeping up with the awe-inspiring titan battles that the series is known for. Since Kong now watches over Hollow Earth and Godzilla remains the guardian of our planet’s surface, Godzilla x Kong 3 might delve into how these two realms become more intertwined, possibly introducing dangers that affect both simultaneously. As we edge closer to 2027, fans can eagerly anticipate fresh insights about the old lore of these famous beasts and the world they dwell in.
Godzilla x Kong 3 hits theaters on March 29, 2027.
