Ever since the unveiling of the title for Godzilla X Kong: Supernova, there’s been plenty of speculation about who the Monsterverse’s next villain might be. However, a subtle detail in the movie’s logo seems to suggest a beloved character from Godzilla’s past could make an appearance. Although the meaning behind “supernova” in the title remains a mystery, its release was accompanied by the first footage and a phone number to call – details that have been meticulously examined for clues. As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but feel excited about what this might mean for the upcoming movie!
As a devoted cinema enthusiast and avid fan of the Monsterverse, I must say that the series has masterfully intertwined classic monsters with fresh concepts across its first six movies (and one TV show). Nevertheless, the upcoming film Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire introduces three new antagonists – Skar King, Shimo, and the Great Apes. This has sparked a widespread belief that a monster from Godzilla’s Toho era will make a comeback in the Titans’ world. Interestingly, the title of Godzilla X Kong: Supernova suggests a connection to SpaceGodzilla, who was spawned from a black hole (the aftermath of a supernova). However, the movie’s logo subtly hints at another equally intriguing direction.
Godzilla X Kong: Supernova’s Logo Points To Gigan
The Alien Cyborg Is A Well-Established Fan Favorite
The emblem for Godzilla X Kong: Supernova showcases the well-known Godzilla X Kong typeface from the Monsterverse advertising, with the additional, more stylish word “Supernova” below it. This word has letters enveloped in a fiery reddish-orange radiance that appears to be nebulae. Interestingly, there’s a prominent red spot of light positioned right behind the letter R at the center of the logo, illuminating the backdrop for “Supernova”. For dedicated Godzilla enthusiasts, it’s reminiscent of the red glow from Gigan’s visor.
In the 1972 film “Godzilla vs. Gigan”, an alien cyborg kaiju named Gigan made his debut. This character was introduced as the ultimate weapon of the Nebula M Space Hunters, sent to Earth alongside King Ghidorah with the intention of conquering our planet. Known for his supersonic flight capabilities and the ability to shoot a laser beam from his forehead, Gigan’s body is adorned with sharp edges, making him a formidable foe. One particularly dangerous feature is a spinning circular saw that extends from his torso. Gigan has proven to be one of Godzilla’s toughest adversaries, having inflicted damage on the King of Monsters numerous times.
How Gigan’s Origin Could Be Adapted For The Monsterverse
After Mechagodzilla, Augmented Titans Are On The Table
In the Monsterverse series, Godzilla and Kong have fought against both extraterrestrial Titans like Ghidorah and robotic Titans such as Mechagodzilla. Therefore, introducing a cybernetically-enhanced Titan wouldn’t be particularly innovative but more of a logical evolution. Given that we’ve already witnessed Kong with his B.E.A.S.T. glove, it’s not unreasonable to imagine an unidentified Titan from the Hollow Earth being enhanced for malicious purposes, possibly by the leftovers of Apex Cybernetics. Additionally, since Gigan hails from deep space and SpaceGodzilla shares the Supernova/space theme of the title, both monsters align perfectly with this cosmic concept.
Gigan Is A Better Fit For The Monsterverse Than SpaceGodzilla
Godzilla Has Already Battled An Evil Version Of Himself
In essence, when it comes to the current Monsterverse, Gigan appears to be a superior match compared to SpaceGodzilla. The reason being, Gigan represents one of Godzilla’s primary adversaries without simply being another clone of Godzilla. On the other hand, SpaceGodzilla, in essence (though it may not be entirely fair), is essentially a replica of Godzilla with minor aesthetic changes, an array of enhanced abilities, and crystals protruding from his shoulders. As thrilling as he might be as a monster, we’ve recently witnessed Godzilla fight another iteration of himself in Mechagodzilla in two previous films. Although an updated design and explanation for SpaceGodzilla could potentially remedy this, Gigan seems to be the more consistent and engaging option.
Legendary’s MonsterVerse – Key Details | |||||

Movie/TV Show | Release Date | Budget | Box Office Gross | RT Tomatometer Score | RT Popcornmeter Score |
Godzilla | 2014 | $160 million | $529.1 million | 76% | 66% |
Kong: Skull Island | 2017 | $185 million | $568 million | 76% | 70% |
Godzilla: King of the Monsters | 2019 | $200 million | $387.3 million | 42% | 83% |
Godzilla vs. Kong | 2021 | $200 million | $470.1 million | 76% | 91% |

Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire | 2024 | $150 million | $572.3 million | 54% | 89% |
In a different phrasing, it could be said that Gigan offers a unique flair to the Monsterverse, with his design and abilities standing out, especially considering his alien cyborg background. Unlike monsters such as SpaceGodzilla, Ghidorah, or Destoroyah who pose threats of global annihilation, Gigan could make an outstanding villain for a Godzilla-centric narrative with less catastrophic, but potentially more engaging conflicts. Instead of attempting to destroy the world or subjugate mankind, Gigan could be portrayed as a Titan slayer, compelling Godzilla to defend his fellow Titans. With the title Godzilla X Kong: Supernova suggesting a focus on Gigan, he seems like an ideal candidate for the upcoming movie.
