Goku’s Toughest Fights in Dragon Ball

As an observer, I find myself immersed in the heart of the Dragon Ball series, delving into the King Piccolo Saga – the seventh act, just shy of the climax. This particular saga introduces us to Demon King Piccolo, a significant character who marks a turning point in the storyline. Notably, this arc is where we witness the show’s first major death and the initial time when the Dragon Team unites to safeguard Earth from an impending planetary peril.

Along the journey, Goku, our protagonist, is tested beyond his limits, proving that resilience and determination can overcome even the most daunting challenges.

In my perspective, the King Piccolo Saga is brimming with unforgettable showdowns, marking a shift towards a more ominous atmosphere in the world of Dragon Ball. It’s during this era of fear and chaos that Goku truly shines, delivering some of his most exhilarating battles!

Dragon Ball Episode 103: Tambourine Attacks!

Among King Piccolo’s offspring, Tambourine is the one who murdered Krillin, a friend of Goku. Upon finding Krillin’s lifeless body, Goku hastily hops onto his Nimbus cloud to pursue Tambourine with maximum speed. Eventually, Goku manages to catch up to Tambourine, at which point he confesses that he killed Krillin in order to obtain the Dragon Ball and a roster of fighters within the martial arts association.

Tambourine unleashes a Mouth Energy Blast at Goku, shattering the Flying Nimbus and sending Goku plummeting into the forest below. Persistently assaulting Goku, Tambourine delivers such powerful blows that Goku ultimately loses consciousness. In doing so, Tambourine demonstrates his superior strength over Goku and departs, seemingly leaving him unconscious in the woods.

Dragon Ball Episode 105: Here Comes Yajirobe

Initially, Goku and Yajirobe clash due to a miscommunication. Later, after Tambourine severely injures Goku, Goku stumbles upon Yajirobe’s meal in the wilderness and consumes it to rejuvenate his strength. Angry about Goku eating his food without permission, Yajirobe immediately assaults him. Remarkably, Goku remarks that Yajirobe is the most formidable opponent he has ever encountered, implying he surpasses Tien’s power level.

Reflecting on the events of the King Piccolo Saga, it seems Yajirobe displayed remarkable strength by effortlessly defeating Cymbal, while Tien faced considerable difficulties against Drum. Given this, one could argue that Yajirobe ranks second in terms of power among the heroes alive during that time. Intriguingly, a battle between Goku and Yajirobe ended inconclusively, as Goku paused upon noticing the Dragon Ball around Yajirobe’s neck.

Dragon Ball Episode 108: Goku’s Revenge

In their second fight, Goku exhibits significantly greater power compared to their first encounter, largely due to being well-fed. This boost in strength and agility allows him to lay into Tambourine so forcefully that even Yajirobe believes Tambourine has been killed.

Instead of Tambourine rising and launching a Mouth Blast at Goku, he does so. Goku swiftly evades the attack, and in response, Tambourine makes an attempt to flee, but Goku employs his Power Pole to ascend and unleash a Kamehameha instead. In retribution for Krillin’s demise, Goku eliminates Tambourine. However, King Piccolo senses the loss of his son and directs his attention towards Goku.

Dragon Ball Episode 109: Goku vs. King Piccolo

Following the revelation that Goku had slain his son, King Piccolo confronts him straightaway. To his shock, Goku manages to knock down Piccolo initially. However, upon removing his cloak, the true battle commences. In an instant, Piccolo overpowers Goku severely, leaving him on the brink of death in mere seconds. King Piccolo then unleashes multiple Finger Beams at Goku, critically injuring him. In response, Goku attempts to retaliate with a Kamehameha, but it proves ineffective.

In response to a powerful attack from Piccolo known as Makosen, Goku appears to be fatally wounded, his heart seemingly halted. As Piccolo departs to collect the Dragon Balls, it’s a stroke of good fortune that revives Goku, and Yajirobe steps in to rescue him.

Dragon Ball Episode 115: Awaken Darkness

Goku intends to utilize the Super Divine Water for immense power boost, but Korin cautions him about its lethal history. Subsequently, Goku and Yajirobe encounter a seemingly invincible icy beast, the Darkness. Even a Kamehameha fails to vanquish this creature, compelling them to retreat. As they delve deeper into the Cavern of Darkness, the Darkness closes in on them, assuming the guise of Master Roshi’s ghostly apparition.

In this instance, “This moment initiates a similar scenario.” In Episode 116 titled “A Taste of Destiny,” Goku squares off against Master Roshi’s apparition in a battle. As they fight, Darkness is struck by Goku’s bravery and resolve, rewarding him with the Ultra Divine Water. Consuming the Ultra Divine Water is a battle on its own, as it has previously claimed the lives of fourteen warriors; aware that there’s no other option to defeat Piccolo, Goku decides to take the risk and drinks the water.

Dragon Ball Episode 119: Battle Cry

Amidst the escalating chaos in West City, Tien valiantly steps forward to confront King Piccolo. However, the Containment Wave fails and Drum overpowers Tien mercilessly. On the brink of collapse, Goku miraculously appears at the right moment to rescue Tien and engage Drum. In a brief but breathtaking battle, Goku delivers a lethal kick to Drum’s head, slaying King Piccolo’s latest offspring. The confrontation between Goku and Drum in Dragon Ball, despite being short-lived, showcases the remarkable growth in power that Goku has experienced since his initial fight with Tambourine.

Dragon Ball Episode 120: Goku Strikes Back

In this intense battle, Goku and Piccolo clash physically, with Piccolo’s attacks proving ineffective against Goku. A powerful punch from Goku results in such a forceful counteraction that it tragically takes the life of Piano in the ensuing collision. Undeterred by the potential impact on his lifespan, Piccolo amplifies his power to maximum levels. The ground trembles beneath their fight, and the castle shakes as well. With renewed vigor, Piccolo continues his assault on Goku. Goku is momentarily knocked down but quickly regains his footing to prepare a Kamehameha. This energy wave is unleashed at King Piccolo, who defends himself with a protective barrier. In an innovative move, Goku redirects the Kamehameha to circle around and strike King Piccolo from behind, thus inventing the first Bending Kamehameha technique.

In their fierce, hand-to-hand battle, King Piccolo successfully incapacitates Goku’s right leg with a powerful energy blast. However, undeterred, Goku persists in the fight, leveraging his Power Pole as a makeshift crutch to retaliate and strike King Piccolo squarely in the jaw. In response, King Piccolo unleashes more lethal beams, causing Goku to lose his Power Pole. With an Explosive Demon Wave, Piccolo then obliterates the entire kingdom and Central City. Fortunately, Tien intervenes, carrying Goku aloft just as the last of Tien’s energy reserves were depleted. This selfless act allows Goku to block King Piccolo from launching another devastating wave. The battle rages on, with King Piccolo leaving a crater in his wake after another attack.

King Piccolo recognizes he’s at a disadvantage in the battle and chooses to act cowardly instead. Facing an exhausted Tien Shinhan, Piccolo warns that if Goku takes any action, he will harm Tien. A crowd, including Yajirobe, Bulma, and Launch, watches as Goku fights. Recognizing the potential for harm to Tien, Goku decides to endure King Piccolo’s torment. King Piccolo inflicts wounds on each of Goku’s limbs except his right arm, leaving Goku completely incapacitated. Preparing to deliver the final blow, Goku, despite his weakened state, proclaims with pride.

In the heat of battle against King Piccolo, I unleash a Reverse Kamehameha, propelling myself forward at lightning speed and delivering a devastating punch that pierces straight through his torso. As he hangs on by a thread, King Piccolo manages to muster up the last of his power to spawn Piccolo Jr within a tiny egg. In his final moments, he urges his offspring to avenge him before his life comes to an end in a blazing inferno. With the world now safe, I emerge victorious against Piccolo. King Furry praises me for my heroics, and I make my way to Korin’s Tower to meet Kami, the Earth’s divine protector.
