Goldberg’s Scrapped Idea For AEW Debut Revealed

Goldberg's Scrapped Idea For AEW Debut Revealed

As a seasoned wrestling fan with over two decades of fandom under my belt, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia when I think about Goldberg’s absence from the ring for over two years. The WCW legend’s brief return in WWE, culminating in his match against Roman Reigns at Elimination Chamber 2022, was a thrilling reminder of the electrifying energy he once brought to the squared circle.

Goldberg, a legendary figure in wrestling, has been out of the limelight for more than two years now. His last wrestling match was against Roman Reigns at the 2022 WWE Elimination Chamber event, which ended in defeat for him after just six minutes. This loss marked the end of Goldberg’s recent run with WWE, which started back in Fall 2016 and consisted of a total of 12 matches. Despite this setback, Goldberg has expressed his desire to have one final run in the ring before he retires for good. The WWE Hall of Famer had previously been assumed to have ended his career in 2004.

That final run could have happened in AEW, and as recently as earlier this year.

I once had a conversation with Chris Van Vliet on his “Insight” show, and I shared that although I never came very close to securing a deal with All Elite Wrestling (AEW), I did propose the idea of teaming up with Sting for his retirement tour.

In his own words, Goldberg shared, “I contacted Sting with the hope of joining his project. I believed we could create a heartfelt farewell collaboration at some point. However, it wasn’t all about me. Sting’s talents overshadow mine in every way. I don’t aspire to dominate that field. Our timing didn’t align perfectly for what could have been an impressive finale, but ultimately, it was his moment.”

At AEW Revolution in March, Sting formally hung up his wrestling shoes, concluding his three-year tenure with AEW. Prior to this, Sting was compelled to retire in late 2015 due to injuries sustained during a bout against Seth Rollins. The emotional send-off for Sting was shared with a multitude of generations: Darby Allin (his tag team partner in AEW), his sons Garrett and Steven Borden, and longtime rival Ric Flair. Goldberg might have played a similar role to Flair, being there for his fellow ex-WCW veteran.

Goldberg stated that he finds it challenging to fairly evaluate their production since he doesn’t regularly watch it, only catching occasional clips. He mentioned that without consistent viewing, it becomes difficult for him to provide a logical assessment of their overall quality, implying that his lack of knowledge about the AEW product is significant.

At Wembley Stadium on August 25th, Sunday, All Elite Wrestling will stage its largest annual event, named AEW ALL IN: London.
