The planned release of “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum” was initially slated for 2026, but recent developments suggest it might be pushed back. In a recent interview with Deadline, Warner Bros. Pictures’ CEOs Pam Abdy and Mike de Luca discussed their studio’s future plans and current outlook. Abdy mentioned that the script for “The Hunt for Gollum” is still in progress, with expectations to submit it next month. Given the timeline typically required for filming and post-production of projects like this, it seems we might not revisit Middle-earth on the big screen as soon as we had hoped.
Abdy and de Luca were discussing various major franchises and properties currently being developed by Warner Bros., when the topic of The Hunt for Gollum arose, punctuating one of Abdy’s comments. “In addition to things we’re looking forward to,” she expressed, “Andy Serkis is working on the Gollum movie.” She continued, “We recently had an excellent meeting with Philippa Boyens regarding Gollum, and I believe we’ll receive the script in May.
In the early 2000s, Boyens collaborated with Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh on scriptwriting for the The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Now, all three are coming back as producers for the upcoming film The Hunt for Gollum, with Boyens being the only one returning as a writer. She is currently working on the new script alongside her daughter Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou, Gittens’ writing partner. The movie will be directed by Serkis, who will also reprise his role as both Gollum/Smeagol.
Earlier this year, Serkis had already hinted to fans that “The Hunt for Gollum” may not arrive in 2026. During an interview with “The Direct” back in February, he mentioned a new target release date of December 2027 instead. Fans are on edge as they ponder the casting process, given that the narrative revolves around Gandalf (played by Sir Ian McKellen) and Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), and both actors have expressed their willingness to reprise their roles if it aligns with the storyline. Since more than two decades have passed, the age of these characters might become a distraction, but so could recasting or using digital de-aging techniques.
The movie titled “The Hunt for Gollum” will delve deeper into an event that transpired during the tale of The Fellowship of the Ring, which was only briefly touched upon in the film. Following Bilbo’s departure from the Shire and Frodo’s acquisition of the One Ring, Gandalf embarks on a quest to learn more about this sinister artifact. He enlists Aragorn’s assistance to locate Gollum for additional information. Utilizing his exceptional tracking skills, Aragorn becomes integral to this mission. This brief incident is extensively detailed in J.R.R. Tolkien’s book, and was previously adapted into a fan film; however, it is now being expanded into a full-length feature by the series’ prominent creators.
The film titled “The Hunt for Gollum” from “The Lord of the Rings” series hasn’t started its pre-production phase yet, but it’s progressing with a planned release in December 2027. For now, you can stream the original “Lord of the Rings” trilogy on Max, and J.R.R Tolkien’s books are accessible in print, digital, and audio book formats.
