A significant number of people have expressed strong disapproval upon learning that The Outer Worlds 2, due for release on PS5 in October, will retail at $80 or £70.
After a strong performance at the Xbox Games Showcase, it has been confirmed that Obsidian’s upcoming role-playing game will be one of Microsoft’s initial ventures into pricier $80 releases. The game’s page on Steam indicates that it will carry the expensive pre-order price.
Initially, for quite a few people, including us, the reaction was one of astonishment. Even though Microsoft had hinted at raising store prices before, it wasn’t something we expected when it came to The Outer Worlds 2 being chosen as the game to test out this increased cost.
The Outer Worlds is a strong role-playing game, and its sequel appears to be even better. However, compared to big-budget, AAA titles, The Outer Worlds isn’t typically what comes to mind.
It’s already quite steep when Sony and Nintendo charge $80 for their top-tier games, but suggesting that The Outer Worlds 2 might cost the maximum retail price currently seems unreasonable or excessive, if you’re viewing it from an external perspective.
Once more, the response to the confirmation has been overwhelmingly critical. On platforms such as Reddit, social media, and comment areas including this one on Push Square, the feedback has been harsh.
Upon the announcement on Sunday evening, we conducted a public survey, and the data clearly indicates that a staggering 53% of more than a thousand respondents firmly declare they wouldn’t consider paying $80 for The Outer Worlds 2. An additional 35% have no intention of purchasing it in the first place. That hurts.
In contrast, just 12% of those who voted expressed genuine excitement for the game, even with its high price.
To put it another way, it seems clear that PlayStation 5 gamers are not satisfied with the current state of affairs. However, this dissatisfaction among PS5 players doesn’t necessarily imply that Xbox is making a full bet on Game Pass for The Outer Worlds 2. Instead, it could simply mean that Xbox sees Game Pass as an important strategy for releasing The Outer Worlds 2.
It seems many believe that the high cost is intentionally designed to persuade consumers to opt for Game Pass subscription, but given the impressive performance of the Green Team’s latest PS5 adaptations, it’s hard for us to understand the effectiveness of this tactic.
What are your thoughts about The Outer Worlds 2 when it launches in October? Will it struggle on PS5, or does Microsoft have a clear strategy for its success? You can express your opinions by adding a casual shrug in the comments section below.
