In an exclusive behind-the-scenes sneak peek for the upcoming action film “Love Hurts,” original cast members Ke Huy Quan, Sean Astin, and Jeff Cohen from the classic adventure movie “The Goonies” emotionally reunite. The brief video captures Quan reminiscing about working with Astin on their new project, expressing that it had been over four decades since they last collaborated. Notably, Cohen, now a practicing entertainment lawyer (Quan is one of his clients), made a visit to the set to catch up with his former co-stars. Quan declared the day they were together again as “very special.” You can watch this heartwarming reunion on Universal Pictures’ YouTube channel in the space provided above.
The movie titled “Love Hurts” is set to hit theaters on February 7th. Leading the cast is Oscar-winning actor Quan as Marvin Gable, a prosperous real estate agent who finds himself entangled in the criminal world again upon receiving a message from Rose (Ariana DeBose), a significant figure from his past. In the official trailer for “Love Hurts”, Astin can be seen playing one of Marvin’s colleagues at the real estate firm, possibly his superior.
In 1985, under the direction of Richard Donner, the movie “The Goonies” was launched. It swiftly emerged as one of the iconic blockbusters of its time, thanks to favorable criticism. With a global earnings of $125 million and an initial investment of just $18 million, it proved to be a significant box office success. Mikey, Chunk, and Data, portrayed by Astin, Cohen, and Quan respectively, were the main characters in this film. Despite ongoing discussions about a “Goonies 2”, no further developments have been made so far.
The upcoming film “Love Hurts,” set for release in early 2025, has generated significant anticipation due to Quan’s debut as the leading actor and its association with 87North Productions, the creative force behind recent action sensations such as the John Wick series, Atomic Blonde, and Nobody. Not only will it deliver thrilling, skillfully executed action sequences, but it also promises a touch of heartwarming ’80s nostalgia, given its connection to The Goonies. It appears that Astin’s role in Love Hurts may not be substantial, but the prospect of seeing him and Quan together again after so many years is undoubtedly exciting. If the film performs well enough to merit a follow-up, perhaps we’ll see these two talents reunite once more.
There’s a chance that Quan and Astin might reunite in the original series where they first met. Recently, news broke out that a new Goonies film is underway, but it remains unclear what Warner Bros. intends to do with it. The project was merely described as a “Goonies treatment,” which could mean anything from a complete reboot featuring a new cast or a continuation with familiar characters. It’s intriguing to see where this goes, but given that WB has been trying to produce a Goonies 2 for years without success, fans might want to curb their enthusiasm about a genuine Goonies reunion for now.
