GPT-5 should have a higher “degree of scientific certainty” than the current ChatGPT — but with less model switching

Over the last few years, there’s been a steady buzz surrounding the upcoming GPT-5 model from OpenAI. Much of this excitement stems from the scant information that has managed to leak about the AI system.

In 2024, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman confidently asserted, with a strong scientific basis, that the intelligence of GPT-5 will surpass the somewhat lackluster performance of GPT-4. The leader also hinted at improved capabilities and precision in ChatGPT once the model is released.

According to Sam Altman:

“GPT-4 is the dumbest model any of you will ever have to use again by a lot.”

Lately, the company unveiled their intentions for GPT-5 in a Reddit AMA (an opportunity for anyone to ask questions). This event mainly focused on OpenAI’s latest AI coding aid, Codex, which is intended to assist developers in managing and automating routine programming tasks.

When asked about what GPT-5 will do when it launches together with tools such as Visual Code, and if it could assist with human computer tasks like creating documents and organizing files, OpenAI’s Vice President of Research, Jerry Tworek, suggested possibilities.

GPT-5 is the upcoming fundamental model designed to enhance and improve upon all current capabilities, reducing the need for frequent model changes.

The executive also mentioned that currently, OpenAI has a tool called “Operator” available, designed to automate various tasks on computers. He went on to say that although this tool is still in its preliminary stages, they are working towards a substantial update for it, aiming to enhance its practicality.

It’s worth noting that the executive mentioned plans for creating a single, user-friendly platform where Deep Research, Operator, Codex, and Memory could all be accessed easily and efficiently.

Approximately a month and a half has passed since OpenAI unveiled its intention to phase out GPT-4 from ChatGPT as of April 20, 2025, introducing GPT-4o instead. This development isn’t entirely unexpected, given that Sam Altman hasn’t been particularly enthusiastic about GPT-4. In fact, he openly acknowledged that the model has its flaws, describing it as “not great.

In other locations, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman shared insights about GPT-5, stating it could function similarly to a highly intelligent virtual mind. Remarkably, he also proposed that this AI model may surpass his own intelligence.
