Grace brings long-running mystery to a close in tragic season finale

As a film enthusiast with a penchant for detective dramas, I must admit that Grace season 4 episode 4 left me absolutely shattered, much like John Simm’s character, Roy Grace. The revelation about Sandy’s fate was a gut-wrenching punch to the gut, and I found myself tearing up right along with him.

Having followed the captivating journey of “Grace” through its four enthralling seasons and 12 riveting tales, I must admit that the show has finally unveiled solutions to its most enduring enigma, all while propelling John Simm’s tenacious detective onto a fresh, unexplored trajectory. A thrilling twist indeed!

Ultimately, it acted with great destruction, leading the detective to weep in the embrace of his heavily pregnant fiancée Cleo.

The start of the episode picked up where the last one ended, with Roy and Cleo visiting Sandy in a hospital in Munich. Roy went in to see her on his own first, but she answers he gave him regarding her disappearance infuriated him.

Sandy confessed that she was no longer content in their marriage because he was excessively engrossed in his work and cases, leaving her feeling unable to connect with him.

She decided it was time for a fresh start, so she intentionally disappeared, leading Roy to believe she was no longer alive.

Furious, Roy stormed out, before Cleo convinced him to go back in, along with her.

When the topic of child-rearing arose, Sandy expressed concern, hinting that Cleo might find it difficult given how busy Roy is with his job.

As a passionate film enthusiast, I’d rephrase that sentence like this: I was relieved that Sandy and I hadn’t brought kids into our life together, and with Cleo, I found myself on the way back to Brighton, feeling we’d finally found some resolution in our shared past.

Unfortunately, the final moments of the episode left Roy reeling. It was revealed that Sandy had tragically ended her life, and in a farewell note, expressed her love for Roy, confessing that she’d been struggling for a while and saw no hope for her future.

Additionally, she disclosed some shocking information – she was carrying a child when she departed from him, and the results of the paternity test conducted using Roy’s hair in season 3 were indisputable. He is the father of an eight-year-old boy, named Bruno.

She asked him to keep an eye on Bruno, which will almost certainly be a major storyline in season 5, with Roy getting to know the son he never knew existed.

Season 4 concluded on a somber note, hinting strongly at the possible demise of Norman Potting, as Craig Parkinson’s character embarked on an undercover operation.

Despite ending up safe, Parkinson appeared to depart from the series following the filming of season 4, as he was last spotted with the team rejoicing over their accomplished case. This suggests that it is probable that we will learn about his character’s fate when season 5 begins in its premiere episode.

Right now, you can buy the Peter James “Roy Grace” novels that were used as inspiration for season 4 (Dead Man’s Time, Want You Dead, You Are Dead, and Love You Dead) on Amazon.

Grace seasons 1-4 are available to stream on ITVX now.
