*Warning – contains major spoilers for the Grace season 5 finale*
In a surprising turn of events, the thrilling finale of Season 5 of Grace has arrived, debunking any thoughts that the series had run out of big surprises following its jaw-dropping Episode 3.
Towards the end of the fourth episode, it was Cassian who called for Grace to come visit him in his cell. She obliged and made her way there.
After uniting, Cassian disclosed an unexpected truth: contrary to what appeared in the season 4 finale, Roy’s wife, Sandy, didn’t take her own life; instead, the criminal group they were associated with, Benchdale, had taken her life.
To begin with, it was a car accident that initially led her to be admitted to the hospital in Munich. However, the car crash was actually an attempt on her life, but later they completed their mission and manipulated the evidence to make it seem as if she had committed suicide.
Via Cassian, Benchdale made it clear to Roy that they had knowledge of his and Sandy’s child, Bruno. They believed she owed them a debt that was yet to be repaid, and were intent on retribution. It appears that in season 6, they plan to target Bruno.

Fortunately, there’s no cause for concern among fans regarding the open-ended finale – ‘Grace’ has been granted another season (the sixth one), to continue bringing more stories from Peter James’s novels to life.
It might just keep going on and on, given that the series seems to have nearly matched the extensive collection of James’s Roy Grace books.
Earlier this year, Roy star John Simm was queried if the series might exceed the source material, and he responded: “Indeed, we’ve discussed it among ourselves. Peter has an abundance of creative ideas, so I believe we’re in good hands.
Additionally, our conversation yesterday revolved around expressing our satisfaction with the show veering slightly from the original books lately, a change that’s been happening subtly for quite some time now.
For example, Bella Moy passes away rather quickly in the original stories, but we chose to keep her character alive. This alteration results in diverse characters and modified storylines, making it a significant change.
I find it quite enjoyable when, after reading an entire series of books, readers are surprised by unexpected plot twists because they think they know what will happen next. I appreciate this element of surprise because it underscores the uniqueness of books compared to television shows. In other words, books and TV shows offer different experiences, and I enjoy the distinctness each provides.
“So, yeah, I’m not really worried about that. I think we’ve got plenty of cases to solve.”
