As a seasoned viewer of Grand Designs, spanning over two decades now, I must say that this week’s episode was a nostalgic journey back to the roots of the show. Revisiting Tim and Jules’ first ever build in Newhaven, East Sussex, brought back memories of the early days when the program was just finding its footing.
In this latest edition of Grand Designs, we took a trip down memory lane as Kevin McCloud revisited the very first project showcased on the program, located in Newhaven, East Sussex.
1999 marked the debut of the show, where the initial episode depicted couples Tim and Jules, who together raised four daughters, constructing a fresh family abode on the cliffside.
Initially, Jules was expecting a baby within three months, but similar to many projects on Grand Designs, complications emerged. As a result, when Kevin last checked on the house, it was far from complete. In the meantime, Jules had already given birth to her child named Tiger, and construction work was still underway.
This week’s latest episode finds Kevin meeting up with the couple, dropping by their home to check on its progress.
The very first Grand Designs house we built is now surrounded by a thriving, verdant woodland 🍂🌲. And guess what? Those gleaming gold walls are still standing proudly! #GrandDesigns | @Kevin_McCloud

Straight away, it struck him that a lush forest had grown up all around the house, yet the upper levels continued to offer a vista of the sea.
Changes were made not just within the house, but also on its exterior. The cedar siding was swapped for tiles, and two brand-new conservatories were installed, as well as an observation platform.
Since the show’s recording, Tim and Jules have added five grandkids to their family, and Kevin recently reconnected with Tiger, who is now 26 years old.
As I sat down for another chat with Kevin during the program, I reflected on my first time being part of Grand Designs. I truly believe this show has left us a unique record that we wouldn’t have otherwise. frankly, I’m quite thankful for it because I know my grandkids will find it fascinating to watch.
Additionally, he mentioned about their experience in the house so far, saying: “It seems that one benefit of remaining in one spot is the ability to accumulate a layer of memories, which essentially gives the place a strong sense of familiarity, particularly for children and eventually grandchildren.
It seems that the entire location will be revitalized once the grandchildren visit. Surpassing all of our greatest expectations, it’s turning out wonderfully.
Apart from this emotional scene, the show has also stirred deep feelings in viewers earlier this season. In one particularly touching episode, Kevin found himself shedding tears.
Grand Designs airs on Channel 4.
