Grant Gustin, who played Barry Allen for nine seasons on The CW’s “The Flash” from 2014 to 2023, has hinted at a potential comeback for his character. In a recent interview on the “Inside of You” podcast with Michael Rosenbaum, Gustin talked about possibly reprising the role that was instrumental in The CW’s superhero shows for almost a decade. This discussion arises at a crucial juncture for the character’s future in DC’s live-action projects, especially considering the underwhelming reception of the latest movie featuring Ezra Miller as the main character. Given that Miller’s portrayal of The Flash did not meet audience expectations, the prospect of Gustin reprising his beloved version of the superhero is undeniably intriguing.
During the discussion with Rosenbaum, Gustin clearly expressed his perspective by saying, “Yes, absolutely, there are many points I’d need to explore, not demanding them but seeking information. I’m more drawn towards the creative aspects.” Essentially, he was expressing a preference for understanding the creative path of any future Flash project, underscoring his dedication to the character.
Over nearly seven seasons, Gustin’s portrayal on “The Flash” amounted to 184 episodes, ranking it among The CW’s longest-lasting superhero shows before wrapping up in May 2023. During this period, the show consistently held a strong position within The CW’s schedule, playing a crucial role in shaping the network’s identity as a provider of superhero programming.
It Will Take a While Before We See a Live-Action Flash Again
The 2023 “The Flash” movie, featuring Miller, didn’t do well at the cinema, making just $266 million worldwide compared to its production cost of $200 million. Director Andy Muschietti has since explained this flop, mentioning that the film wasn’t appealing to all types of viewers. Muschietti said the movie “didn’t succeed for various reasons, but mainly because it didn’t capture interest from all four main demographic groups.” He added that studios would typically expect a $200 million investment to draw a wide audience, even reaching viewers as old as grandmothers.
Despite Muschietti downplaying the true causes of The Flash‘s underperformance, it’s clear that the franchise has taken a hit. Notably, when fans inquired about why less prominent characters like Clayface were given movie adaptations before more renowned heroes such as The Flash, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn openly stated that they are delaying the development of any Flash-related projects, emphasizing their policy: “No film will be produced unless the script is fully prepared.
Although The Flash has made brief appearances in Creature Commandos and is acknowledged within the DC Universe, no definite plans for a movie or series have been revealed yet. The studio’s confirmed schedule kicks off with James Gunn’s Superman in July 2025, followed by Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and Clayface in 2026. Notably, Clayface advanced in the lineup because, as Gunn stated, Mike Flanagan’s script was finished and ready for filming.
It seems that a new “The Batman: Part II” is slated for release towards the end of 2027, and other projects such as “Lanterns” and “The Brave and the Bold” are currently being worked on at different stages. This suggests that a potential launch for a new Flash project may still be a few years off. Meanwhile, “Teen Titans” is also under development as a feature film, but it’s uncertain whether Wally West’s character from the comics will appear in the movie version.
