Grant Morrison Confirms Return to Big 2 Comics (But What Series Are They Writing?)

Grant Morrison recently made a major announcement, disclosing their return to the Big Two comics publishers for the first time since 2023’s DC Pride event. Over the past few years, Morrison’s career has taken an unusual turn compared to its earlier days. They penned a novel titled “Luda,” an intriguing tale of magic, love, and enmity, and have also been actively engaging with their Substack audience to discuss their older works while exploring innovative approaches in the comic art realm. The news of Morrison’s return to the Big Two is a significant milestone for the comics industry, as Morrison has consistently been a bestselling and critically acclaimed figure within the medium. Interestingly enough, another unexpected comic book collaboration project was accepted by me last week, as stated on their Substack. This is a Big 2 venture with an artist I hold dear, and although it’s been quite some time since I’ve written mainstream superhero comics, an idea came to mind immediately and I couldn’t wait to bring it to life. So, keep an eye out for an unconventional announcement in the near future!

As a devoted cinephile immersed in the world of comic book narratives, I can’t help but acknowledge Grant Morrison as one of the most productive creators within the DC Universe. His groundbreaking work on Justice League and Doom Patrol has gifted readers with some of the greatest team comics ever written, boasting unparalleled storytelling on iconic characters such as Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, the Flash, and Animal Man.

During the early 2000s, Morrison briefly ventured into Marvel’s realm, producing works like “Marvel Boy” and “Fantastic Four: 1234.” His tenure then led him to “New X-Men,” widely regarded as the best X-Men comic of the 21st century.

However, it’s essential to note that Morrison’s collaborations with Marvel and DC have differed significantly, which could offer intriguing insights into where we might find Morrison penning stories next, perhaps even hinting at new characters to grace the pages of our favorite comic books.

The collaboration between Morrison and DC Comics has predominantly been prosperous, yielding some of the finest superhero comics ever published. Being a scholar of DC, Morrison’s contributions to the publisher have significantly enriched its content. Nevertheless, there was a brief period at the turn of the millennium when Morrison parted ways with the publisher due to the rejection of the “Superman 2000” pitch and suspicions that the movie The Matrix had plagiarized their ideas, which Warner Brothers, DC’s parent company, allowed. However, their relationship with DC ameliorated following Morrison’s return in 2004. Despite criticizing certain aspects of DC, Morrison appears to be more content working at DC compared to Marvel.

Morrison’s tenure at Marvel was far more tumultuous compared to their extended period at DC. Arriving amidst a wave of discontent towards DC, Marvel proved to be an entirely distinct environment for Morrison. Unlike DC, which tends to provide creators more creative freedom, Marvel has traditionally been more editorially controlled. Known for his cautious perspective on editors, Morrison frequently includes contract clauses that prevent editors from altering their stories. This apparent difference in approach seemed to have sparked the conflict between Morrison and Marvel. In their book “Supergods”, Morrison disclosed that they were engaged in regular heated arguments with Marvel editors. As a result, Morrison decided to depart from “New X-Men” even though there were several more years’ worth of stories yet to be told.

Despite some past disagreements, Grant Morrison’s bond with DC Comics has had its ups and downs, as evidenced by the tumultuous production of ‘Final Crisis.’ Insiders familiar with the story know that Morrison and DC occasionally clash. Since Morrison parted ways with DC, the company has undergone significant changes, including a new editorial team taking charge. However, Morrison’s ties with Marvel have grown more strained, with many of the same editors who were in power during his previous stint still holding key positions at Marvel. Though speculation often points to a future return for Morrison at DC, his recent statements hint that he may be revisiting Marvel after an absence of over two decades.

Morrison hinted that the project might involve Marvel, considering their past work with Marvel. Since Morrison has collaborated extensively with major DC characters, it’s difficult to guess which unlikely character they would handle at DC. However, Marvel boasts a vast array of characters that one wouldn’t anticipate Morrison writing for. Therefore, it seems plausible that Morrison might be returning to Marvel. It remains uncertain where Morrison will end up, but given their statement, this could be an exciting turn of events for them and their fans.
