*Warning: This article contains spoilers for Grantchester season 8.*
In the United Kingdom, we’re nearly ready for Grantchester season 9! Excitingly, this will mark Tom Brittney’s last appearance as Reverend Will Davenport.
For approximately five to six years, I’ve been immersed in the world of Grantchester, portraying a character with immense depth and intricacy. These years have been the most fulfilling of my career thus far. Working on this project has created a joyful environment for me.
However, it seems that every great tale must conclude, and this moment felt particularly fitting to mark the end of Will’s journey. It’s intriguing to imagine how the narrative will unfold without him at the helm.
Initially, Will showed an intense and vibrant beginning, and it seemed you witnessed his journey towards a relatively content conclusion, despite its melancholic tone. Yet, it felt right for him to depart, and this departure carried an air of tranquility, which made the ending seem fitting.
Brittney’s exit provides an opportunity for Rishi Nair (from Hollyoaks and Count Abdulla) to join the cast, where he will portray the charming character of Reverend Alphy Kotteram alongside Robson Green.
When, exactly, will the next season premiere on our TVs? Here’s all the essential information about the upcoming ninth season of Grantchester.
Grantchester season 9 release date
Season 9 will arrive in the UK on Wednesday 8th January 2025 at 9pm on ITV1.
Grantchester season 9 cast: Who’s returning? And who’s new?
On the upcoming scene, there will be significant alterations in the main characters, as Tom Brittney is leaving his central role as the cherished vicar Will Davenport in Grantchester.
The announcement was made in 2023, with Brittney expressing in a statement: “The past five years playing Will Davenport have been an unforgettable experience. I had the opportunity to tackle crimes alongside my dearest friend, and collaborate with an exceptional cast and crew that I could only dream of working with.
I’ll really miss it, more than anything else. However, it’s now my turn to pass on what I had, just as it was passed to me before. And I’m truly thrilled that Rishi is about to become part of the Grantchester family.
Rishi Nair took over the role of Reverend Alphy Kotteram. Known for his reluctance towards murder investigations, he found himself sharing more similarities with Geordie, played by Robson Green, than he had originally believed.
In an interview with TopMob magazine regarding the new cast members in season 9, Green shared this intriguing detail: “Following their initial encounter, Geordie’s wife Cathy (portrayed by Kacey Ainsworth) inquires about the newcomer, to which Geordie responds, ‘He’s got a powerful punch, and that’s all I can say for now.’ This interaction sets the stage for the upcoming episode.
In the show, Mrs. C, portrayed by Tessa Peake-Jones, calls him a “dark-skinned man, not native to this region.” Let’s address that situation.
The tranquil, welcoming ambiance of this village undergoes a dramatic shift, revealing the hidden emotions and opinions of its inhabitants. A fresh, invigorating force has infiltrated the community.

What happened at the end of Grantchester season 8?
In essence, season 8 delved into the emotional ups and downs experienced by Will following his unfortunate motorbike mishap.
In the final episode of season 8, we witnessed the vicar’s most difficult moment. Desperate for relief, he resorted to taking pills as a form of self-treatment. This led him to a brutal encounter, resulting in injuries and his being found unconscious in a police station far from home.
Geordie felt rightfully disheartened towards Will, yet their lives took an unexpected turn when a farming couple from our town was brutally murdered by stabbings. In the ensuing chaos, Will got kidnapped only to later uncover the secrets hidden behind these heinous crimes.
Upon returning to their village, Will is resolved to leave his turbulent history in the rearview and ask for Bonnie’s forgiveness, particularly as she is about to give birth.
As a devoted film enthusiast, I can’t help but express my excitement over the climactic turn of events in the series. My long-standing antagonism towards Leonard has escalated to new heights in the final act, as DCI Elliot Scott (played brilliantly by Michael D Xavier) orchestrates a daring maneuver that results in Leonard’s arrest and a surprise raid on his halfway house. The tension between them reaches an all-time high, culminating in a shocking scene where Elliot confronts Leonard directly.
Due to Elliot’s overuse of force, he was reported to the commander by Larry (Bradley Hall). In turn, Geordie was informed that Elliot’s retirement request wasn’t approved and instead, he will be transferred. Thus, it turns out that Geordie won’t be leaving after all!
The ending sequences show baby James, Will and Bonnie’s newborn, being baptized, and during the ceremony, we learn that Leonard managed to prevent the closure of his halfway house. As a result, it continues to serve as a secure refuge for many others.
By the end of the season, Will’s fortunes definitely took a turn for the better, as his inspiring message of optimism propelled a sense of renewal towards the upcoming season.
Grantchester season 9 plot: What will happen?
As our primary characters concluded their story with a triumphant ending, it’s clear that Season 9 will probably be filled with emotion. This is because the villagers (and audiences alike) must say goodbye to Will and his loved ones.
The summary for season 9 indicates that it’s 1961, and things are going well for Will and Geordie. The families frequently gather, whether for Sunday meals or discussing summer vacations. Additionally, Mrs C and Jack act as cherished grandparents, while Daniel and Leonard are beloved adopted uncles, creating a joyful, expansive family unit.
However, when an opportunity arises that could drastically alter Will’s life, will he choose to forgo Grantchester and Geordie?
In the midst of his own grief and escalating family disputes between Cathy and their teenage daughter Esme, Geordie feels isolated and without support. However, when he apprehends an intruder attempting to break into the vicarage, there’s a chance that his time working alongside a vicar might not be completely finished yet.
Reverend Alphy Kotteram naturally mistrusts those in power and holds no interest in delving into murder cases.
However, Alphy and Geordie might unexpectedly share many similarities, and for Alphy, murder mysteries seem to be an ever-present aspect of life in Grantchester.
Geordie and Alphy experience a variety of situations, ranging from dangerous circuses to abandoned infants and unfriendly historians. They also encounter vanishing servants and lethal satirists. These experiences show them how religion can be misused, but they also learn that faith, love, friendship, and renewal can emerge from such hardships, offering hope.
