Grantchester’s Tom Brittney says leaving was hardest decision of his life

As a seasoned movie critic who’s seen more than my fair share of goodbyes and farewells on set, I must say that the upcoming final season of Grantchester feels bittersweet. Having followed Tom Brittney‘s character, Reverend Will Davenport, through his passionate journey, it’s hard not to feel a pang of nostalgia as we approach the end of this chapter.

As a devoted fan, I can hardly contain my excitement as the next season of Grantchester is about to premiere! And this time, it’s extra special because it’ll be the last season that features Tom Brittney in his role as Reverend Will Davenport. Can’t wait to see how he wraps up his journey as our beloved character!

Actor Brittney admitted that it wasn’t an effortless choice to leave the popular ITV show. He expressed that the departure of his character would be a sad moment.

For nearly five to six years, I’ve been immersed in the world of Grantchester, bringing a richly complex character to life. These years have been the most joyful and fulfilling of my career thus far. The atmosphere on set was always uplifting, making it an overall delightful experience.

However, it seems appropriate that every great tale should reach its conclusion, and this moment felt like the perfect time to draw the line under Will’s narrative, allowing us to explore where the story might lead without his presence.

Initially, Will ignited with intense passion and zest, and I believe you witnessed his journey, including its ups and downs, leading to a relatively content conclusion, although it was tinged with sadness. However, his departure seemed tranquil, giving the story a satisfying closure.

In addition, Robson Green shared his feelings by saying, “I’m still going through therapy. Tom, besides being a friend, is a very intimate friend, and intimate friends often know more about you than even your own family does.

Tom and I have experienced more than just being filmed; we’ve also lived through an untold story. This is what our experience in Grantchester is all about, and it mirrors Rishi’s journey with Daisy Coulam, the series creator, who has brought this captivating world to life, filled with characters and relationships she has crafted – a relationship that is both powerful and endearing. That’s the magic of Grantchester.

Green went on: “It’s an ongoing blessing, and I’ve been performing in front of cameras for quite some time now. I believe Tom, Rishi, and Daisy would concur that the atmosphere here is unlike many other productions. It’s incredibly welcoming, a stunning and delightful environment, and it’s a pleasure to be part of.

It’s likely Tom will concur – the joy we shared on set was truly exceptional. Leaving behind such laughter, as Daisy depicted so poignantly, can be quite challenging on a deeply personal level, as it feels like bidding farewell to a cherished companion.

On the day when it was time to bid farewell to Tom, there was no need for pretense or acting. The scene had not yet begun, but we were already emotional and tearful.

Brittney added: “We could not stop crying. We were like, ‘No, save it for the camera.’”

In a similar vein, the creator of Grantchester, Daisy Coulam, mentioned that “People on set were just as emotional off-camera. Many were shedding tears.

Discussing the last scene, Green elaborated: “When Tom and I locked eyes, it seemed to resonate with Daisy and Emma as well. On the page, you can predict how it unfolds since it’s skillfully penned.

Performing Daisy’s episode is effortless due to its exquisite writing, which is reminiscent of knowing all the lyrics to a favorite song because it’s so well-crafted. The same can be said about Daisy’s writing – it’s so elegantly structured, it’s like learning Shakespeare.

As a movie enthusiast, I must admit that crafting this scene was an arduous process and the day of filming was equally challenging. Yet, amidst the struggle, the outcome is nothing short of breathtaking – a poignant farewell and a heartfelt tribute to an unforgettable journey that persists.

It proved quite challenging indeed. Extremely challenging, in fact. Yet, my feelings for him are strong, and the feeling is mutual. We remain the closest of friends.
