2023 saw the announcement that Tom Brittney, a beloved figure among Grantchester fans, would be leaving due to his desire to pursue fresh opportunities.
He expressed that he’ll feel its absence deeply, more than anything else. However, the moment has come for the responsibility to be handed over, just as it was given to him before, and he’s thrilled about Rishi Nair becoming part of the Grantchester family, taking on the role of Reverend Alphy Kotteram.
Similarly to how Brittney is embarking on new ventures, the character of Will Davenport from the series will also find himself faced with an opportunity that could dramatically alter his life, causing him to leave behind the Cambridgeshire village he knows as home in season 9.
And that comes to pass in the premiere, which made its UK debut tonight (Wednesday 8th January).
In my own words, I’d put it like this: The bishop invited me for a chat and proposed an exciting opportunity in Newcastle – a larger church community with more complex issues to tackle. Yet, I felt confident in my abilities to take on these challenges, just as he believed I would.
Will clearly declined the offer, expressing his contentment with his current situation and stating that he’s unwilling to disturb his newborn baby’s routine by moving.
And that, it seemed, was that.
After discussing matters with his wife Bonnie, friend Leonard Finch, and a street preacher named Sam White, he ultimately changed his viewpoint to the opposite side.
He expresses concern, saying, “I don’t want to miss out if I’m arriving too late,” as he speaks to the bishop, ready to embrace the opportunity and move forward into the next phase of his existence.
In a reference to Brittney, who debuted on the ITV drama back in 2019, he stated that parting ways was “the most difficult choice” he’s ever had to make.
However, it seems appropriate that every great tale reaches its conclusion, and in this case, it felt fitting to draw a line under Will’s narrative. Let’s wait and see how the story evolves without him.
At first, Will showed great enthusiasm and intensity, and I believe you witnessed his journey, which concluded in a relatively contented manner, despite its melancholic tone. Yet, it seemed as though he departed tranquilly, and this sense of peace made the conclusion feel fitting.
However, his departure opens up an opportunity for the previously mentioned Alphy, who promises to create a commotion upon his grand arrival.
