In a chat with ComicBook this week, filmmaker Martin Campbell openly discussed his feelings about directing the movie ‘Green Lantern‘. Despite being disappointed by the film’s reception, he doesn’t hold grudges over the jokes that are made about it nowadays. He also shared some thoughts on what he might have done differently in retrospect. For instance, he wished that Ryan Reynolds, who he described as “very witty”, had been involved in the scriptwriting process. Additionally, Campbell felt that a stronger connection could have been established between the film’s opposing forces, particularly between Hector Hammond and Parallax, ideally being revealed at the movie’s climax.
Currently, Campbell is actively publicizing his upcoming film titled “Cleaner“, set to be released on February 21st. However, during an interview with ComicBook, the director found himself answering questions regarding his past work on “Green Lantern“. When asked about Ryan Reynolds’ jabs about “Green Lantern” in the “Deadpool” films, the director admitted that he has noticed them but hasn’t had a private conversation about it with the actor yet.
He commented that Ryan was fantastic. Working on the film together was enjoyable, despite its challenges. Ryan and Blake Lively were delightful collaborators. Ryan is known for his quick wit – I even mentioned this to another writer – I wish he had written the script! I believe he would have done an excellent job.
In retrospect, Campbell expressed his sentiment that he might have connected Parallax and Hammond better in the narrative of the film, remarking, “Wasn’t Parallax just a face on a floating cloud, after all?” Conversely, Hector Hammond originally appeared as a human character, allowing actor Peter Sarsgaard to deliver a more nuanced performance compared to what a CGI cloud could achieve.
He mentioned that there seemed to be a hint of wanting that character to be connected to the movie’s antagonist, if you catch my drift. Ideally, all the characters should be intertwined in some way, yet they weren’t in the script. However, each character is quite prominent in the comics – Sinestro, Kilowog, and more. Unfortunately, this approach didn’t work out as planned, which was disappointing to him, but such is life.
When Green Lantern premiered in 2011, one of the main criticisms was that the villain Parallax, without a face or physical form, seemed to weaken the narrative. However, it’s important to note that this entity is actually connected to Hector’s power source. In the movie, Hector, a scientist, is granted access to the alien Abin Sur’s corpse for an autopsy. Unbeknownst to him, a fragment of Parallax’s power was embedded within Abin Sur. This fragment then transfers to Hector, causing a dramatic transformation. As a result, he develops psychic abilities, but his physical appearance becomes distorted and his mental health deteriorates due to the sudden change.
Despite some speculation, Hammond is not an embodiment of Parallax and their narratives do not share a direct connection. In fact, Hammond encounters a series of defeats against Green Lantern before Parallax makes its appearance on Earth, draining his vital energy to the point of death, ruling out any possibility of a follow-up story. While a few alterations could have provided a more satisfying resolution according to Campbell’s perspective, the current narrative structure remains as it is.
If you’re eager to watch, “Green Lantern” is currently available for streaming on both Netflix and Max in the United States. On February 21st, head to your local cinema to catch Campbell’s latest film, titled “Cleaner“.
In the heart of modern-day London, I found myself drawn into a gripping tale unfolding at an annual gala for an energy company. A band of passionate activists stormed this event, holding 300 innocent people hostage. Their intent was to unmask the company’s corruption, but their righteous cause is twisted by an extremist within their ranks, willing to sacrifice every life in the building to broadcast his chaotic ideology globally.
Remarkably, perched 50 stories high on the building’s exterior, a former soldier-turned-window cleaner, skillfully portrayed by Daisy Ridley, becomes the unlikely hero. With her younger brother among the hostages, she risks everything to save them all from this deadly standoff.
