Greg Davies talks chaotic Never Mind the Buzzcocks return and what’s in store this season

As a long-time aficionado of British comedy and a connoisseur of chaos, I can’t help but feel an immense sense of joy seeing Never Mind The Buzzcocks back on our screens once more! With Greg Davies at the helm, Noel Fielding, Jamali Maddix, and a host of new musical guests, this show is like a delightful, chaotic symphony that I simply can’t get enough of.

This month, the popular music-themed trivia show “Never Mind The Buzzcocks” returns to Sky with a boom! Fresh musical celebrities grace our screens, along with themed episodes that will crank up your brainpower for some electrifying quizzing excitement!

Once again, we have the return of Greg Davies as our host, along with team captain and panelist Noel Fielding, as well as Jamali Maddix, who are ready to create chaos yet again.

For the past four seasons, the music-focused game show has featured Davies as its host. But one must wonder, what is it that continually draws him back to this role?

He clarified that he finds the situation to be authentic confusion, which is what appeals to him. He also mentioned that many shows tend to be somewhat structured but with an element of disorganized chaos.

Moreover, as Davies mentions, despite all the efforts put into producing Buzzcocks – from selecting questions and inviting suitable guests to the studio – when the cameras are on, it essentially becomes an informal gathering where people casually engage in a music trivia game, with a touch of excitement and perhaps some unexpected chaos.

He continued: “So I just love that it feels properly mad, and I love and hate it. Because I’m an ex teacher, I like order as well but there’s part of you that just loves feeling like things are a bit out of control sometimes.”

Besides fresh musical acts and Sophie Willan stepping in for Daisy May Cooper who’s coming back for the Christmas episode, there are also four themed special shows: “Buzzcocks Revisits… the ’90s, ’00s, Rock Era, and Girl & Boy Bands. A new team captain will join us in each show.

As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but get excited about the array of talented women on this show, from Perrie Edwards and Courtney Love to Mel B and Beth Ditto. Their competitive spirits are particularly intriguing, making each episode a must-watch!

Regarding the ’90s and the Girl & Boy Bands project, Davies reminisced about collaborating with Mel B and Perrie Edwards, a duo he didn’t anticipate being quite as passionate about the entertainment industry.

Davies stated that having Mel B as a guest during the ’90s was thrilling, and he admired her fierce competitiveness and determination to always come out on top. He found it utterly captivating.

Observing that Perrie also possesses a strong competitive streak, Davis commented: “It seems reasonable that if you’re part of a girl group or a boy band, there’s an inherent competitiveness among the members as well, doesn’t it? So perhaps they had their fair share of squabbles.

Indeed, the performers on this show aren’t limited to musicians alone; there’s a group of comedians as well, all vying for success. However, their level of competitiveness seems less intense compared to others in the contest.

Davies quipped that he has to somehow coax them into being competitive,” or “Davies jokingly admitted that he needs to persuade them to act as if they care.” The goal is to make it clear that Davies is joking about having to encourage others (the regulars) to be competitive, and that making Noel Fielding care about points is a difficult task due to comedians enjoying mischief.

In the second episode of season 4, the musical performers are Nelly Furtado and AJ Tracey, two artists with starkly different music styles, which is exactly what sets Buzzcocks apart as a show.

I find the show fascinating for comedians too, because all comedians have their unique style or routine, and we tend to rely on this when entering a new environment. However, what makes this show special is its focus on music, which draws in so many passionate individuals.

He continued: “Comedians love music too [and] it brings out just a different side of people. And I just love people getting to see a side of [people].”

By presenting an instance of singers stepping out of their customary settings, Davies pondered over the appearance of Pete Doherty and Carl Barât on the program, offering viewers an unusual perspective they might not have encountered before.

“They just did a song and dance halfway through it,” Davies explained.

I find them incredibly entertaining and sharp-witted, and it’s a pleasure to know that they are close friends. It’s refreshing to witness these two individuals who usually lead rock bands interacting casually like this. The whole scene has an exciting vibe to it.

“And that’s what I love about the show.”

Never Mind the Buzzcocks continues Wednesday 23rd October on Sky Max and NOW.
