Warner Bros. is said to be working on new chapters for the Gremlins and Goonies series. These upcoming productions were mentioned in a preview of Warner Bros.’ future projects beyond 2025, as reported by Deadline. Alongside these two titles, the lineup includes numerous DC Universe films, a Matrix movie penned by Drew Goddard, and The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. However, the progress on the Gremlins and Goonies movies remains unclear at this time.
In the ’80s, two standout movies produced by Amblin Entertainment – “Gremlins” and “The Goonies” – left lasting impressions. Both received favorable critic reviews and were financial successes, yet only “Gremlins” got a follow-up film. The sequel, titled “Gremlins 2: The New Batch,” was released in 1990, although it didn’t match the original’s box office success. However, over time, it has built a loyal fanbase. As for “The Goonies”, there have been ongoing talks about a sequel for years, but lately, there seems to be less news about it.
Although neither “The Goonies” nor the Gremlins franchise have had new theatrical releases for quite some time, they both remain significant in popular culture. “The Goonies” still leaves its mark on contemporary works such as “Agatha All Along” and “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew”. On the other hand, the Gremlins universe has given birth to an animated television series, which serves as a prequel to the movies. The second season of this show, named “Gremlins: The Wild Batch“, made its debut in October 2024.
Remember that while there are rumors about new Gremlins and Goonies movies being produced, it’s important not to count on them actually materializing yet. Chris Columbus, who wrote the original Gremlins, mentioned working on a film in 2021, but as of now, nothing has been officially released. Similarly, Sean Astin, a star from Goonies, stated in 2017 that Goonies 2 was essentially confirmed, but it appears both productions are struggling to take flight, suggesting they might be stuck in development limbo for some time before potentially being abandoned.
It’s not hard to see why Warner Bros. wants to revitalize these franchises. Over the past few years, sequels that capitalize on nostalgia for classic films have turned out to be profitable ventures. For instance, the sequel Beetlejuice, released 36 years after the original, was director Tim Burton’s highest-grossing film in over a decade, earning $451.1 million worldwide. With Columbus working on the new Gremlins movie, there’s a good chance that both Gremlins and Goonies could achieve similar success, providing more hits for the studio.
The advancement of these projects hinges on the development of their scripts. It would be disappointing if either series was revived solely for profit; the creative minds behind them would likely aim for these films to prove their worth as valuable additions. The challenge lies in crafting a storyline that offers a fresh take on the premise, keeping it intriguing. This is no easy feat, and while it’s exciting to imagine the Goonies embarking on a new journey or the Mogwai causing chaos once more, it might be wiser to leave these franchises alone if they can’t come up with a captivating way to revive them.
