As I delve into the lives of these former Grey’s Anatomy stars, it’s fascinating to see how their journeys have unfolded beyond the hallowed halls of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. Each actor has managed to carve out a niche for themselves in the vast world of television, showcasing their versatility and talent in various roles.
Sarah Drew’s time at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital did not end on her terms.
As a devoted fan who closely followed the storylines of Grey’s Anatomy, I often ponder about the choice made back in 2018, when the character I portrayed as Dr. April Kepner and my on-screen partner Jessica Capshaw were unexpectedly written off the show.
Sarah expressed on the Call It What It Is podcast, hosted by Camilla Luddington and Jessica, that she was unexpectedly dismissed in a manner that seemed harsh and unfair. She further explained that the sudden exit from the ABC medical drama felt akin to being let go from one’s own family.
For her, there was a peculiar feeling of joy following the nomination of the digital series B-Team from Grey’s Anatomy, which she directed, for an Emmy award in 2018. However, they didn’t win as James Corden’s Next James Corden took the prize during the ceremony.
In a subsequent remark, the actress from “Cruel Summer” stated, “This outpouring of affection was so vast, it felt as if everyone was expressing their love for you, even after you’ve passed away.
Sarah joined the show in 2009, having been promoted to a series regular during the seventh season. Her narrative primarily focused on her marriage to Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams), their tragic loss of their son, and her role as a trauma surgeon. The storyline concluded at the end of season 14 when it was disclosed that she departed Seattle with Jackson to manage the Catherine Fox Foundation.
TopMob has reached out to ABC for comment but has not heard back.
However, following her dismissal, she has made efforts to rejoin the show, as it is currently in its 21st season, and has removed any previous references that might suggest she was an individual involved.
She now understands the medical drama more deeply as she draws near her guest, recognizing that it no longer defines the core of her professional journey.
The 44-year-old stated that she feels absolutely detached from her appearances on the show. This detachment, she believes, brings tranquility. While being part of the series, one never knows what might transpire – be it a decline in interest in your character or upsetting someone, which could lead to complications. However, when she returned briefly just to greet everyone, she felt no apprehension and requires nothing more from anyone associated with that set anymore.
Previously, Sarah had expressed her thoughts and emotions about the sudden conclusion of the series.
In a 2018 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she expressed that she sees purpose behind events and finds beauty even amidst sorrow. She doesn’t feel remorse or resentment towards anyone for this phase of her life, instead choosing to accept it wholeheartedly. She cherished the extraordinary period she spent on Grey’s Anatomy, where she got to share stories that resonated with her deeply.
As a fortunate follower, I had the privilege of collaborating with Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers – truly a masterclass in excellence. Beyond that, I was part of an extraordinary collective of individuals whose bonds will last a lifetime. Working under their leadership provided me with a solid foundation to grow professionally, while also ensuring my family thrived in a supportive environment. Shonda’s unwavering commitment to her team – particularly mothers and women – made it challenging for me to find anything worth feeling upset about.

As a lifestyle connoisseur, let me recount an intriguing tale from a popular TV series. In the third season, I found myself standing at the altar, only to abandon my companion, Cristina, moments before the ceremony. After that, I vanished, eventually triumphing in the prestigious Harper Avery Award at another location. My journey led me to picturesque Zurich, Switzerland, where I opened a state-of-the-art hospital. Over time, I tied the knot, started a family, and settled into my new life. Fast forward to season 10, in a surprising turn of events, I extended an invitation to Cristina to take over my hospital as I prepared for retirement.
As a devoted fan, I recall the time when Isaiah Washington departed from the series following allegations that he used a derogatory term towards his costar T.R. Knight during an on-set dispute. His attempts at damage control only intensified the issue, ultimately leading to his dismissal from the show. Remarkably, Washington and ABC reconciled, allowing him to rejoin the series in 2014. Since then, his most memorable roles include Thelonious Jaha on The CW’s The 100, which ended with his character’s demise in season five, followed by a critically praised performance in Starz’ P-Valley.
In the fourth season, young Intern Norman found himself battling misconceptions about his role, as people often mistook him for an attendant due to his youth. A blunder occurred when he mistakenly informed a patient she was near death, and later, he suffered a stroke. After undergoing surgery to extract a clot, he made the decision post-surgery that he would transition to the psychology department.
Edward Herrmann, a well-recognized actor with a significant reputation, is primarily remembered for his role as Richard Gilmore on the television series ‘Gilmore Girls.’ Prior to his passing in 2014, he made appearances in multiple episodes of ‘The Good Wife,’ ‘Harry’s Law,’ and even ‘American Dad.’
During Bailey’s maternity leave, Sydney, known for her bubbly personality, temporarily filled her role and left many people feeling overwhelmed by her cheerfulness. She had an outing with Derek at some point, but then seemed to vanish in the early part of season four. However, the season 21 trailer has now hinted that Dr. Heron is making a comeback.
Kali Rocha most recently starred on Liv and Maddie and Man with a Plan plus a 2024 episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm.
Among the most heart-wrenching stories on this list, by the end of season five, George made a fateful decision to join the army as a trauma surgeon. As he was heading towards fulfilling his duty, he heroically saved a woman from getting run over by a bus, but unfortunately, he was struck instead. His condition was so critical upon arrival at the hospital that no one identified him until he managed to write his nickname, “007”, on Meredith’s hand using his finger. Sadly, despite their best efforts, they could not save him, and he passed away tragically.
Following a series of challenging backstage periods (which included Isaiah Washington reportedly using offensive language regarding him), Knight found it difficult to navigate certain plotlines for George and was displeased with George’s limited screen time at the start of season five, leading him to request an early termination of his contract.
Knight returned to Shondaland in 2017 for an arc on The Catch, and has also appeared on The Good Wife, 11.22.63, and Genius, among other series. In 2019, he appeared on The Bravest Knight and in 2020, he appeared in HBO Max series The Flight Attendant with Kaley Cuoco. He also returned to Grey’s for one episode to meet Meredith during her COVID-19 coma.
Erica Hahn and Callie Torres were in a relationship with potential for growth, but this ended when Erica discovered that Izzie Stevens had severed Denny Duquette’s LVAD wire to save his life, using a heart from one of Erica’s patients. When Callie refused to address the situation, Erica decided to end both her relationship and her job in season five.
As a dedicated follower, I’ve had the privilege to feature in several renowned productions over time. These include Bosch, Bates Motel, Supergirl, The Good Doctor, Chicago Med, and The Good Fight, as well as the 2019 movie Bombshell.
In the early part of season six, the intern, Ryan, went missing. More recently, actor Brandon Scott has been featured in shows like “Dead to Me” on Netflix, “13 Reasons Why”, and “This Is Us”.
In a nutshell, Izzie Stevens developed cancer, tied the knot with Alex Karev, overcame cancer but then seemed to vanish during season six. Eventually, she reappeared and confessed that Seattle wasn’t her home anymore. Later on, it was revealed that Alex received divorce papers, and it has been discovered that Izzie secretly had Alex’s twins, moved to a ranch in Kansas, and became a surgical oncologist.
Katherine Heigl stepped away from her role in 2008 by choosing not to put herself forward for Emmy nominations, as she felt the content wasn’t worthy. By 2010, her character was written off entirely. In the subsequent years, she expressed a desire to reprise her role, but creator Shonda Rhimes has not shown interest. “I’m finished with that narrative,” she said to TVLine in 2015.
Initially gaining fame in romantic comedies, Heigl subsequently appeared in several more of these films. She later transitioned back to television with “State of Affairs” and then “Doubt”, followed by joining the cast of “Suits”. Most recently, she has been part of the series “Firefly Lane” from 2020.
Despite the frequent turmoil that many Grey’s interns seem to stir up, Megan might opt for the scalpel instead. She found herself in a complex romantic situation involving both Steve and Pierce; while she was dating Pierce, she slept with Steve, which in turn led to Pierce wanting to harm Steve. Later, Megan became pregnant by Steve, eventually marrying him. Since season six, Megan has been absent from the scene following Derek Shepherd’s decision to rehire her.
Molly Kidder has been involved in several acting roles after her stint on ‘Grey’s’, such as appearing as a guest star on ‘Outsourced’ in 2010 and taking part in various indie films.
In a later development, Josephn Williamson (who was part of the love triangle involving Megan/Pierce/Steve) ended up being let go during a round of layoffs in season six. Since then, he has made appearances on shows such as “Here and Now” and the 2019 movie “Ford v Ferrari,” starring alongside Christian Bale and Matt Damon.
As a die-hard admirer, let me rephrase the situation: I, like a star-struck fanatic, found myself as one of three interns in a romantic triangle with Steve. The course of true love ran smooth for him, as he ended up marrying Megan and becoming a father to her child. Despite the looming threat of layoffs, Steve managed to outlast them all and made it to season eight. However, after that, I never saw or heard from him again – leaving me, his ardent fan, in suspense.
Since his enigmatic absence from “Grey’s”, Mark Saul has made appearances on various other television shows, including “Franklin & Bash”, “Mom”, “The Great Indoors”, “Grace & Frankie”, and “Modern Family”.
In the sixth season, nurse Olivia lost her job due to a merger with Mercy West. However, she reappeared briefly in season 14, when her son accidentally swallowed a toy while she was visiting family in Seattle. Coincidentally, Alex, who had previously given her syphilis, treated her son during this visit. Additionally, Olivia spent some time conversing with Jo, Alex’s then-fiancée.
Since her departure from Grey’s Anatomy in 2009, Sarah Utterback has made some TV appearances. Notable among these are her roles on the series Reception and Mysteries of Laura.
Graciella, the intern who was last spotted during the hospital shooting in season six, has been keeping extremely busy. She’s recently starred in an arc on ‘How to Get Away with Murder’, made appearances on shows like ‘S.W.A.T.’, ‘The Good Doctor’, ‘American Housewife’, ‘Animal Kingdom’, ‘Snowfall’, ‘Criminal Minds’, ‘NCIS: LA’, ‘Anger Management’, ‘Bones’, and the 2019 miniseries ‘Reckoning’. In addition, she’s been seen on several other shows.
In season six, it was Nora who tragically became the initial victim when Gary Clark, armed with a deadly weapon, went to the hospital with the intention of taking Derek’s life. Upon being shot in the head by Gary, she unfortunately passed away on the spot.
Nora Zehetner appeared in a couple episodes of Mad Men after her Grey’s demise, and recently starred on Designated Survivor and the 2019 series The Right Stuff.
During the filming of season six, Percy met an unfortunate end, unlike many other incidents where deaths occur swiftly. Instead, his demise was prolonged as he became trapped in a room along with Mandy Moore’s character and Bailey. In a shocking turn of events, he was shot at point-blank range. Despite Bailey’s valiant efforts to save him, their fate took a grim turn when the elevators malfunctioned during the evacuation, effectively sealing Percy’s fate.
As a lifestyle expert looking back at my journey, I’ve certainly made a name for myself! From gracing the screens of Riverdale, Modern Family, The Originals, to my latest role as Otis Graves on Supergirl, it’s been quite the ride. Each new opportunity has brought fresh challenges and rewards, and I couldn’t be more grateful for every step along this exciting path.
OBGYN Lucy seized a remarkable opportunity in Africa, which was originally intended for Alex, primarily due to the fact that there had been no discussion about Alex potentially moving to Africa. Consequently, Lucy relocated to Africa instead, and since season seven, she has not been heard from again.
I’ve made quite a name for myself, being recognized primarily as the loyal friend and confidante of Jessica Jones, portrayed by Rachael Taylor, in the acclaimed Netflix series Jessica Jones, and also as a part of the ensemble in the miniseries The Defenders.
Initially portrayed as a bitter ex-wife of Derek, Addison later gained popularity with a spinoff and is best known for her regular appearances on Grey’s Anatomy, particularly in the season seven musical episode that stirred some controversy when she assisted in saving Callie following a car accident. She also made an appearance in the episode where Meredith imagined her mother was alive and married to Richard, while Derek and Addison were still unhappily married. Later, she returned for a story arc in 2023.
She ended Private Practice married to Jake (Benjamin Bratt) with a son, Henry.
She went on to appear in Fargo, have her own short-lived show Bad Judge, star as a grieving mother in 13 Reasons Why, and help bring about the end of the world in The Umbrella Academy. She also stars on the 2020 show Emily in Paris.
The heartbreaking demise of Lexie, Meredith’s vivacious half-sister, marked another poignant moment on the series, occurring amidst one of the show’s most tragic storylines – the plane crash. Unfortunately, she didn’t survive her return to what was then called Seattle Grace Hospital, being fatally injured by debris from the plane wreckage while Mark Sloan mourned her loss. In a touching reunion during Meredith’s COVID-19 coma, Lexie and Mark hinted that they had reunited in the afterlife.
Actress Chyler Leigh previously appeared in the amusingly titled show “Taxi Brooklyn,” and later assumed the tough-as-nails character of Alex Danvers on “Supergirl.
In the eighth season, Mark (known as McSteamy) didn’t die instantly in the plane crash; instead, he was taken to a hospital where he lingered for a few days despite his critical injuries. The hospital was later named in honor of both him and Lexie, following the decision of the other plane crash survivors who had won a settlement from their lawsuit to pool their money and purchase it. Mark and Lexie’s spirits visited Meredith while she was in a coma, suggesting that they reunited after death.
Eric Dane departed from his previous show to take on a leading role in TNT’s “The Last Ship,” which wrapped up after five seasons in November 2018. Currently, he can be seen acting alongside Zendaya and Storm Reid in the HBO series “Euphoria.
Do you recall the OGYN resident who used to date Jo in season nine? Their relationship turned sour when he discovered secrets she had kept from him, leading to a physical altercation. This fight ended with Jason sustaining an injury after falling and hitting his head. Alex persuaded him not to press charges against Jo, and since then, he has disappeared from the series.
After his initial role, Charles Michael Davis appeared in ‘The Originals’ on The CW, followed by ‘Younger’ on TV Land, then moved to ‘For the People’ on ABC, and most recently, he’s been seen on ‘Chicago P.D.’ on NBC. In other words, his acting career is thriving.
In the tenth season, the quirky intern Heather tragically passed away amidst a massive storm. Her life ended when she suffered an electric shock while attempting to aid Richard Webber.
Tina Majorino most recently appeared on CBS’ Scorpion and an episode of The Good Doctor.
Dr. Herman served as Arizona’s strict guide in fetal surgery in Arizona, but appeared much more understanding once Arizona discovered about Nicole’s large, fatal brain tumor. Amelia successfully removed the tumor, yet Herman eventually lost her sight and departed during season 11. However, she resurfaced in season 14 to assist Arizona in leaving the show by providing grant funds for her to establish a women’s health center in New York.
As a devoted fan, I can share that I was part of the audience who marveled at Geena Davis gracing our screens in “The Exorcist” on Fox back in 2016, prior to her triumphant return to “Grey’s”. Lately, I’ve had the pleasure of witnessing her captivating performances in Netflix’s “GLOW” and the enchanting reboot of “She-Ra”.
After the plane crash, Cristina Yang experienced a prolonged period of intense hardship and healing. Later, she found herself without the Harper Avery award, understanding that it was unattainable at her current hospital. This realization led her to consider moving on. In the tenth season, her old flame Preston Burke invited her to Zurich to manage a modern hospital he had established, allowing him to retire with his family. Before departing, she shared one final dance with Meredith.
At present, Sandra Oh is making a significant impact in television, playing Eve in the highly praised BBC America show “Killing Eve,” which earned her a Golden Globe. Similar to Geena Davis, she also features prominently on Netflix’s “She-Ra and the Princesses of Power.” Furthermore, she provides voice acting for a character in Robert Kirkman’s animated series “Invincible.
Originally, Shane was an overconfident intern who almost burned out from excessive work, yet he developed a strong bond with Cristina. He inquired about accompanying her to Zurich, and eventually, he made the move.
Gaius Charles, famously recognized as Smash Williams from Friday Night Lights, has also been seen in Aquarius, Taken, and more recently, he made an appearance on CBS’ show God Friended Me.
During a challenging period, Derek Shepherd accepted a position working under President Barack Obama in Washington, D.C., hoping to bring Meredith and his family along. However, she declined, leading them to live separately for some time. Eventually, he chose to rectify the situation by returning home to perform the job remotely, mending their living arrangements.
In season 11, he and Mer found their happiness restored. As he was wrapping up some outstanding matters, he stumbled upon a devastating multi-car collision. He spent numerous hours tending to the injured victims. Tragically, moments after getting back into his own car, a truck struck him. The hospital’s emergency team, ill-equipped for trauma cases, neglected to perform a head CT scan, which eventually led to his demise.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but share my feelings about the fact that Patrick Dempsey, known for his iconic role on Grey’s Anatomy, decided to hang up his scrubs. In his own words, he confessed it was challenging to maintain the show’s captivating storylines and yearned for more quality time with his loved ones. He even managed to get an early release from his contract.
He shockingly returned to Grey’s for a series of dream sequences in season 17.
It seems Leah Murphy, the series regular, faced numerous challenges that ultimately led to her termination during season 10. However, surprisingly, she reappeared on screen in season 13, this time collaborating with Maggie. A few episodes later, much like her initial appearance, her character disappeared once more.
Tessa Ferrer was also part of the cast in the Hulu version of the World War II miniseries ‘Catch-22’, alongside George Clooney.
Callie departed from Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital after her girlfriend Penny received a prestigious scholarship in New York. Despite a heartbreaking loss in the custody battle against Arizona, she was planning to remain in Seattle. However, things changed when Arizona decided to let Callie go with their daughter Sofia at the end of season 12.
Sara Ramirez departed to star in a new role on CBS’ show “Madame Secretary”. Since then, they have portrayed the controversial character Che Diaz on HBO’s spin-off of “Sex and the City”, titled “And Just Like That”.
Penelope’s time at Grey Sloan was rough from start to finish. She arrived as Callie’s new girlfriend with the reputation as one of the doctors who had killed Derek, and found herself having to work for a grumpy Meredith. Then when she got a prestigious job in New York and Callie decided to follow her, she set off the devastating custody battle between Callie and Arizona. Last we heard, she and Callie had broken up (hence Arizona’s moving to New York), but that relationship was always doomed.
Samantha Sloyan gained prominence by playing the role of Leigh in ‘The Haunting of Hill House’, and has also made appearances on series like ‘SEAL Team’ and ‘The Rookie’.
In Season 13, Minnick stepped in as Richard Webber’s replacement to instruct the residents. However, her arrival was met with widespread disapproval, even leading to Meredith’s suspension. This animosity escalated when Minnick became so fixated on protocol that she neglected to inform the police about a resident missing during a fire, putting Stephanie in grave danger. Fortunately, Stephanie survived a near-death experience.
Later on, Marika Dominczyk teamed up with Scott Foley, a former star of “Grey’s Anatomy”, in the brief-running ABC series titled “Whiskey Cavalier“.
In the finale of season 13, Stephanie chose to venture out and experience something fresh, having come close to perishing in a fire and mourning her deceased partner Kyle for several months (who was portrayed by Wilmer Valderrama).
In the year 2018, Jerrika Hinton appeared in the brief-running HBO drama “Here and Now,” and furthermore, she became part of the cast for the Amazon series “Hunters,” portraying a character who tracks down Nazis.
In the early part of season 14, Nathan decided to depart from Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital as his long-held dream finally materialized: his fiancée, Megan Hunt, who had been held captive for ten years, was rescued. The duo, along with the child Megan had adopted while abroad, relocated to Los Angeles. This event marked the end of Nathan’s growing relationship with Meredith, yet it presented a genuinely joyful conclusion for Riggs and his family.
Martin Henderson, who you might remember from Britney Spears’ music video for “Toxic,” later made an appearance in the TV series ‘Virgin River’.
