As a longtime fan of Grey’s Anatomy, I must say that the upcoming season 21 seems to be brimming with intrigue and excitement! The addition of Michael Thomas Grant as the openly gay chaplain James adds a fresh perspective to the series, and I can’t wait to see how his character interacts with the rest of the cast.
Spoiler warning for the US pace of Grey’s Anatomy season 20, which aired its finale on Thursday 30th May 2024.
Grey’s Anatomy has been confirmed to be returning for season 21, and it couldn’t come soon enough.
Following the end of the abbreviated 20th season, uncertainty hung over several cherished medical professionals as shocking revelations surfaced from all directions.
Nonetheless, it’s been made known that the upcoming 21st season of the popular medical drama will welcome back Jason George as Ben Warren, a character who previously starred in the now-ended spin-off show Station 19.
As a die-hard fan, I’m thrilled to hear that he’s coming back as a main cast member for the next season. Given his real-life marriage to Miranda Bailey, portrayed by Chandra Wilson, it seems like an organic fit for him in the series.
It’s been mentioned that although Season 20 featured less screen time for Dr. Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), she is expected to appear more often in Season 21, as per Deadline’s reports.
With the start of the new season happening this week, I’m curious – what’s coming up for Grey’s Anatomy during its 21st season and when will it air?
Grey’s Anatomy season 21 release date
It’s officially set that Grey’s Anatomy Season 21 will be broadcasted in the U.S. on both ABC and Hulu, starting from this coming Thursday, the 26th of September.
This time, the series is unlikely to be disrupted by industrial actions, which means we can anticipate a complete season’s run.
While we don’t have a specific UK release date just yet, it’s clear that the show is expected to resume its run on Disney Plus, with all 20 seasons already streaming there.
Grey’s Anatomy season 21 cast
The following Grey’s Anatomy main cast members are expected to return next season.
- Ellen Pompeo as Dr Meredith Grey
- Chandra Wilson as Dr Miranda Bailey
- James Pickens Jr as Dr Richard Webber
- Kevin McKidd as Dr Owen Hunt
- Caterina Scorsone as Dr Amelia Shepherd
- Camilla Luddington as Dr Jo Wilson
- Kim Raver as Dr Teddy Altman
- Jake Borelli as Dr Levi Schmitt
- Chris Carmack as Dr Atticus Lincoln
- Anthony Hill as Dr Winston Ndugu
- Alexis Floyd as Dr Simone Griffith
- Harry Shum Jr as Dr Benson ‘Blue’ Kwan
- Adelaide Kane as Dr Jules Millin
- Midori Francis as Dr Mika Yasuda
- Niko Terho as Dr Lucas Adams
- Natalie Morales as Dr Monica Beltran
- Jason George as Ben Warren
- Michael Thomas Grant as James
In the upcoming season, the primary characters will experience two cast departures. Actor Jake Borelli is set to return for a farewell narrative concerning his character, Dr. Levi Schmitt, who has been a recurring figure. Similarly, actress Midori Francis will also be saying goodbye to the show after her character, Dr. Mika Yasuda, gets an exit storyline. This makes Francis the first of the newer group of interns to part ways with the series.
Both are expected to appear in multiple episodes before they leave next season.
It’s been mentioned by Deadline that a cost-saving measure might lead to fewer episodes featuring longtime cast members, including Borelli, as part of an effort to reduce expenses. This seems to be the reason behind Borelli’s departure as well.
Additionally, it’s been revealed that Dr Nick Marsh, played by Scott Speedman, has secured a contract for additional episodes in season 21. This could indicate that his relationship with Meredith might be deepening significantly.
In addition to the main cast for season 21, Natalie Morales, who previously appeared as the guest pediatric surgeon in season 20, will now be a regular character.
Furthermore, it’s probable that we will see repeated appearances from actors like Debbie Allen portraying Dr. Catherine Fox and Jaicy Elliot playing Dr. Taryn Helm, which could lead to more returns for these characters.
As reported by Deadline, it’s anticipated that Jason George will take on a significant role as Ben once again in the show, following the conclusion of the spin-off series Station 19. With Dr Warren showing renewed enthusiasm for medicine, it’s been confirmed that George will rejoin the cast in a main role. So, fans will have to stay tuned to find out what awaits him now.
To the existing staff at the hospital, we have a fresh addition – the new chaplain, James, who happens to be openly gay and portrayed by Michael Thomas Grant.
According to ABC’s character portrayal (as reported by Deadline), “James is introduced at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital as an openly gay Episcopal chaplain. He has a particular affection for the younger patients, and his kindness, education, and spirituality give him a sense of ease and assurance in any scenario.
In his private world, James stands at a crucial juncture, ready to embrace affection and willing to take bold steps of trust.
It has been confirmed that Kali Rocha will once again play her role as Sydney Heron, a character from season 2, in our show 17 years after she last appeared. She is scheduled to appear in three episodes of the upcoming season, but specifics about her storyline for this new season are being kept secret at this time.
In a forthcoming October episode, Floriana Lima’s character, who is portrayed as a childhood friend of both Owen (played by Kevin McKidd) and Megan Hunt (depicted by Abigail Spencer), will make her debut on the show.
The upcoming series is hinting at the reappearance of Jackson Avery, portrayed by Jesse Williams, though we’re unsure yet in what role he will return.
What will happen in Grey’s Anatomy season 21?
Well, there are a number of plot points to continue following the finale of season 20.
After numerous disputes, Dr. Catherine Fox decided to make some drastic changes in her professional circle. She ended her partnership with Dr. Meredith Grey due to her hidden Alzheimer’s research, and then severed ties with Dr. Amelia Shepherd and Dr. Teddy Altman, the latter of whom was removed from his position as Chief of Surgery. Dr. Owen Hunt also lost his job when he defended Teddy, as Catherine attempted to move her from a trauma response team to handle a wildfire.
At the same time, the interns were in an uproar due to Dr. Fox’s stern decision against Dr. Lucas Adams. This situation didn’t seem to trouble Dr. Fox much until Dr. Miranda Bailey hinted at resigning.
In other places, Doctor Richard Webber had pondered over his professional path after experiencing a significant turbulent phase due to a close call with relapsing his sobriety.
As Dr. Levi Schmitt pondered over his professional path, he was actively working towards securing a position in a pediatric medicine fellowship. It’s clear that his departure from his current role is just around the corner.
Moreover, it came to light that Dr. Jo Wilson is carrying a child fathered by Dr. Atticus ‘Link’ Lincoln – can we expect their family to maintain its harmony?
In the end, romance seems to be blossoming between divorced doctor Winston Ndugu and newcomer Monica Beltran, while Mika Yasuda and Jules Millin almost shared a kiss. So, what happens next? With Yasuda set to leave, things don’t appear to be heading in a positive direction…
